for a while now, i've been wanting to relocate. i just haven't gotten around to actually looking for both work and a place to stay.. till now. i've never made such a big move, and all on my own. currently, i'm living in southern california. the states i'm considering moving to are: NY, NJ, MD, VA or MA. i've applied to a few job postings out there, but have been responded with a sorry since my address shows i'm located all the way across the nation. i'm assuming vice-versa would be the response from landlords when applying for a place to rent, idk...
anyway, i'd like to ask for any advice or pointers on how i should go about with this move, or any scenarios any of you have gone through that may help me with my endeavor. i'd really like this year to be the year i move, finally. thanks,

I would love to move somewhere else, but get the same response when I send my resume places. I have the added dilemma of being a Canadian applying for American jobs.
I'd love to pack up and move somewhere warmer, closer to the ocean so I can go back to surfing like when I was younger. Good luck in the search, I'm sure you'll pull it off eventually. I wish I wasn't in such a stable job at the moment, then I could really try pulling off a move. Hopefully somebody on here can help you out with some advice. What field are you currently looking for work in?

Lowest cost of living in the area (neither sales nor income tax), a growing number of tech industries, and, along the southern edge, an easy commute to many other employment opportunities in Massachusetts.

In this economy; no employer is going to fund relocation for a new hire, unless you have a unique skill that can’t already be found in the Mid-Atlantic. Your best bet would be to make the plunge and move out into temporary housing until you find a job. Quickest path would be to use a consulting/contracting agency depending on profession. I do a lot of hiring and IMHO an employer doesn’t care about your current location/address, as long as you can show up and reliably report on day-1. Of course on the other hand; we also interview in person with 24~48hrs notice so if a candidate were on the other side of the country, that would be the end of their consideration.
Best of luck… |

Are you sure you are ready for a culture shock. The grass isn't greener on the other side. I left Montreal which is one of the cities other than Québec city which has the closest european influence(and the hottest women in North America) for Calgary back in 1995. I was 21 at the time and was ready to start a new life. Being a total ski nut, I skied my ass off at Lake Louise and Sunshine Village. Also having finished school in Tool and Die making, i didn't have a hard time finding a job, but the salary wasn't incredible since the Alberta govn't didn't recognize the tool and die making trade. I was young and lived at home with my parents so that wasn't an issue. I had a hard time making friends because i wasn't in school. If I would have been younger things might have been different. I went through a depression and it was a difficult time for me. I then decided to come back in 1998. Its something you have to look into. Moving to the other end of the continent isn't easy. Something that wasn't for me could end up good for you. You don't know until you try it. All i can say is try it. If you don't like it, you could always head back. Best of luck Tallazz!!!! ![]()

i've been in this warm state since the 4th grade. i've always loved the four seasons though. Quote:
idk if i'd do it for the Foresters lol. if it came down to it, i would probably sell my SF and use the money for the move. then later on, when i could afford, i'd get another SF. Quote:
no income tax either? a technical job would be one field i'd be looking into. Quote:
i just may have to crash a hotel (or temporary housing) in one of the said states. i have been going through employment agencies looking for contract work, that way i can be sure i'll get paid for at least 6-12 months. Quote:
i'm a Client Support Analyst (helpdesk) in San Diego, supporting Sony Employees/Vendors with technical issues with their PCs and/or accounts. ^ not going to happen lol. although, i did almost move up to Vancouver, BC for film school, years ago. Quote:
can't wait. there was one year out of the 2-3 i lived in Louisiana that it snowed. supposedly, it was the first in a very long time. it also snowed in Turkey, when i lived there. been through the snow in New England when i got to travel through there up to Maine, when i used to live in Florida. i, actually, like the snow & rain. i'm going to hit 30, soon. i guess i'm going through a depression right now just being out here (for many reasons). i hate where i work; i hate where i stay. i want this experience, and, like you said: i could always move back. i don't really have anything here to stay for. ^ as i told dale, somewhere up there. but, my experiences have ranged from valet attendance, to inbound customer service representation, to assembly of respirator sensors, to working on production gigs for film/tv, to doing administrative assistance at a music video/commercial studio, to doing some desktop support, and to doing helpdesk support. weird how i never got to do anything in media arts (graphic design, 3d modeling/animation, motion graphics, web design) since that's what i graduated from school in. sometimes, i feel like going back to school sometime later on and going for a RN or Physical Therapist. but that's something to think about for later.

^^Ha…
Well I for one am thankful for the way Virginia (and Pennsylvania) voted the recent presidential election. But I agree with ya; Virginia remains a rather conservative state especially when it comes to gun-control. But keep in mind tallazzFilipino is coming from CA; one of the most contemporary, idiosyncratic, and liberal states in our country. Where abortion is legal and gay marriage accepted; and where renewable energy and climate control is on the mind of all its residents. Try to find similar values like that in VA and you’ll be sorry. I can’t even get my recycle service to stop throwing cardboard away with the common trash when it’s RECYCLABLE! |

Well, if you work for Sony why not as for a transfer to their big corporate HQ in NYC? Based on what you wrote above, you seem to be a jack of all trades. To get an interview 3000 miles away, you really need to be good at what you do and show that you have loyalty to one company (5+ years). Otherwise, companies see that you did different jobs at different places, etc. No stability.
When I was younger, I hopped from job to job every year. Always in the same field, but nevertheless hopping. I did it because 1) i got bored, and 2) I wanted more money. Until finally someone told me to stop doing that. Its hurting me. So, the last two jobs I've been at have been 5 years each and they have been within the same organization, but different affiliations (Columbia University Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital which is the teaching hospital for Columbia).
