They are reporting a 6.6 quake that just happened in northern Japan....

Yep. After quakes I guess at Niigata, Nagano and Gunma. 6.6 still pretty high for aftershocks

CNN is showing some pretty cool videos of how they build buildings in Japan, simulators of buildings shaking and standing.

They are easily the best prepared nation in the world when it comes to earthquakes and if it had only been the earthquake they probably would have been ok, unfortunately no-one can prepare for a tsunami like that, it will be days before we have any idea of the toll it has taken.

I have a professional interest in this kind of area and although the footage was awful to watch it was good to see all of their training and preparation paying off in the response. It will be interesting to see how the response shifts into recovery in the next few days where I suspect they will show up how poorly the rest of us deal with disasters, hopefully we can learn a thing or two.

8 of 10 plants, including all that build cars.

Edit, they had only closed 5 at the time I posted that. It appears they are up to 8 now.

News just reported that they lost control of the nuclear powerplant and radiation levels are 1000x over a typical day.

Not necessarily a major problem. If they lost power they don't have ventilation fans or charcoal filters which means normal radiation releases will be unfiltered.

I worked in a Nuke for 30 years.

Yeah, but sounds like the issue is loss of cooling - even after the control rods were dropped into the core - because during the tsunami water may have entered into various generators and cooling mechanisms and caused them to fail:
