BAC5.2 will become famous soon enough
Default The best way...

Are there any cool programs on the net that can identify unknown songs?

I have a BUNCH of songs on my laptop that I cannot identify and it'll drive me crazy to not have a decently organized music list. I've probably got around 100 unknown songs.

Ideas?

Only way I can think of would be to take part of the lyrics and search them out. This would take a lot of time on more than a couple songs.

If you have entire albums, you can burn them to a CD and let iTunes find it on gracenote music database. Other than that, I'm afraid the lyric search is the only other way.

Verizon Cell phones can do it as well. The tech is out there. I'm sure there are computer programs that can do it. I'll search around.

Tunatic: free music identification software

This is a program that claims it can do it. YMMV.

The title and artist is usually contained in metadata that's part of the MP3 format. I'm sure there are some MP3 editing programs around that will show this, but I don't have the names of them at the tip of my fingers. An alternative (and fun) approach is a WinAmp plugin called Evil Lyrics. The moment a song starts playing, it goes out to its database of lyric sites and pops up the song's lyrics and other info. It's usually pretty successful unless the song is extremely obscure.

The biggest problem is if it was ripped without access to the internet, so that the computer couldn't pull down the gracenote data when creating the mp3 file. Then you get the "unknown artist" and "untitled" in the metadata.

Indeed.

Phil didn't give us any insight into the heritage of his stuff.

A friend of mine used to have a hand held Sony device that could do this. You'd record a clip from a speaker or radio, hook it up to their website and it would make suggestions. It only worked 25% of the time and the recording had to be pristine (no background noise).

In case anyone was wondering...

GraceNotes works on a algorithm that uses the "lenght" of the track and the number of the tracks on the album to relate an album / CD to a album'CD object in its database. It does NOT actually "listen" to the music and ID the song(s).

There was an infamous case of a pianst who was plagerizing entire albums by obscure artists who was busted by GraceNotes...
