Default Ye Ha! Summer tyres on snow & ice

I've tried to attach a photo but have not managed it on my phone. I drove from Fort William to Portree on the Isle of Skye and then to Invergorden and down to Inverness.

All done on summer tyres (standard Dunlop SP 600s) and I have to say they were faultless. In places the snow was fresh which is always easy but there were bad stretches of ice and compacted ice/snow.

I was expecting it to feel like I had glass tyres but not at all. I was able to brake, turn and accelerate. Braking was the worst aspect but power and steering was fine.

This must be testament to Subarus AWD system? I had no moments even in deep slush.

Photos coming as soon as I'm back to my PC!

I know what you mean. I passed a few cars that were either upside down or on their sides. One van had misjudged the entry to a long bend (or was going 100% too fast) and made it about 30m across heather and undergrowth before the underlying rocks stopped it. It was one hell of an over shoot and I bet it's not delivering ever again.

They are the bog standard Dunlop SP600 in 245/40r18. Apprently they are an sti specific compound.

They are amazing in the wet and dry but I was told they are not supposed to work below 7 degrees centigrade. It was -5 this morning here!

I'm not driving to push the envelope but I am using the car as intended. I'm using graceful turning and gentle power application. Braking makes you realise they are not winter tyres. The other benefit is there has been hardly any

Come on I've asked a billion times on here for people not to exagerate....

Seriously my old XR4x4 AWD system is much better then the Subaru manuals, 1/3-2/3 torque split and stiffer LSD's.

Had fun in the BMW in the snow, 10" wide rear tyres from Turkey are really sorted for drifting and wheelspin under all situations (although it coped better than the Jag XK which didn't get up the slope at the end of the road!) - thank god for the DSC!

Took the Zed out this morning... the back would step out at will with a quick prod on the loud pedal - quite entertaining but wouldn't want to drive too far in it

Not sure what's happened there but I take it all back. I landed in Inverness tonight from Lewis and have driven from inver to Perth down the A9. Snow is very bad and the SPs do not cope with deep slush and snow. Neither does the intercooler hole or any of the front vents and holes.

100 miles at 40mph crabbing sideways a lot is no fun at all. Winter tyres getting ordered this weekend!

The SPs were fine until it got wet and you need really good deep an sharp treads. They did not like that snow as it was thick, deep and wet.

What wheels do you have Don? Apparently getting wheels to fit over the Brembos is an issue?

I run 17 x 7.5" Rota Torques with 235/45/17 Nokians.
( standard wheel/tyre size combo for the early hatch)

Slightly smaller footprint (better for snow) and cheaper tyres.

They also clear the Alcons,
