Subaru has problems with the diesel boxer. Evidence of damage to the engine come from Sweden, where 12,000 were delivered diesel boxers already exchanged 109 free. According to Subaru , the damage usually occurs at kilometer levels from 65,000 to 80,000.

Subaru engine: The diesel boxer may fail prematurely. It relates to the Legacy and Outback models.
Two causes were identified: silicone drop, which came during the assembly process into the crankcase, may adversely affect engine lubrication. In addition, crankshaft bearings have been installed with too little game. Even in Germany, there was, according to Subaru isolated cases, exact numbers are not known. If an engine failure perform, will "each case individually, taking into account the proven maintenance and vehicle history" assessed for fairness, according to a spokesman at the AUTO BILD request.
not only in Sweden, Germany has this problems too

Well that explains the couple of cases of broken crankshafts we've heard of. It's good that they've been able to tie it down to a build error- maybe a specific batch or indeed operator, one wonders.

I know the legacys and Outbacks are (or were) made in Indianna, in the USA but if the engines for them are made there too, I would think this wouldn't affect foresters as they're made in Gunma, Japan.
Ofcourse this depends where the engines are built and if they're assembled in the same place the vehicle is made or in 1 place and then distrubuted

The Indiana cars are primarily for the US market, where there are no diesels. Legacies and Outbacks for other markets are made in Japan with all other models.
