Well lots of chat on the pistonheads thread about the new (and old) foresters. Interesting that its a 2.0 turbo. It will produce 280 BHP but sadly though an auto box.

There's no auto as they didn't want to handicap it on day one. Square wheels were also thought about but they felt round ones would also be better.

Great to see it's coming here. Yes the lack of transmission choices is a shame, but on the other hand without the mpg gains from the CVT they might not have imported it at all. (Which is supposedly why they never imported the current XT model).

Anyway it'll be interesting to try a modern CVT on a decent engine.... if anyone can make a good one, Subaru can.

I never understood the auto boxes soooo..... here comes the silly question
Is it a standard auto or the one which I call "semi auto" - it can be either auto or you can change gears using flaps on the steering wheel?

It's a CVT using a metal belt - the ratio changes continuously to give best performance and economy. However, you can optionally select 8 artificial ratios if you prefer. It has a torque converter to give smooth starts, but it locks up pretty smartly for better economy.

I did try one on an XV, it was quite impressive on a short drive.

Wink

Isn't the CVT system used on the newer Impreza, the one that's been on sale in Australia/US/Japan etc for the past 12 months or so ? I seem to recall good reviews of it.
Subaru do a good 2L turbo engine, always have done. Engine/gearbox has always been well engineered.
Now design is another matter altogether ,as far as I am concerned Subaru couldn't design themselves out of a wet tissue bag ! Apologies to current owners but I think present model is dreadful.

My twopenn'orth !

Cheers

Brian

Red face

That is what I meant, my opinion only but it just does not appeal to me at all design wise.

Excellent link Don, and dare I say it's looking 'better / less offensive' the more I see it....

.....few language problems and after a few clicks I think I may have inadvertently booked a test drive of an XT in Osaka next Thursday

As far as I'm concerned its about what it does not what it looks like. If I wanted a looker I would never have bought a Forester, its one ugly pug. I'm just happy that they have decided to release the turbo in the UK - a full 280bhp, so more than a pre-mapped FSTI - just wish it had a proper manual as slush boxes leave me cold.
