Default OBD reader/scanner

My little yellow CEL light has come on though the car seems to be running fine. I've been thinking about buying an OBD reader but haven't a clue which one to get (they seem to vary massively in price from about 12 to 60 on ebay)- has anyone bought one of these that they could recommend?
many thanks
Jon

As in previous threads on the subject if all you want to do is read fault codes then a cheap and cheerful Universal scanner will do.............

UNIVERSAL CAR DIAGNOSTIC SCANNER CODE READER OBD2 + CAN: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo UNIVERSAL CAR DIAGNOSTIC SCANNER CODE READER OBD2 + CAN: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

U380 Universal Engine Scanner Code Reader OBD OBD2 EOBD on eBay (end time 04-Jul-10 15:05:40 BST)

If you want more, then Scangauge II or Turbogauge is probably the way to go.........

I went for a U380 and for the cost its already saved me money from getting the garage to read it and then them charge me an arm and a leg.

Find out the code, post it on this forum and I'm sure you will be told if its serious or not.

Well... The Yellow CEL light and the flashing "cruise" light had come on again and gone off again by the time the unit arrived but eventually the U480 reader came and plugged it in It told me I have DTC 1 (which is a "detected trouble code" acording to the booklet) but when I attempt to find out what the code is I get "N/A 01:01" which I think is another way of saying "computer says no".
So what now- do I just wait until it happens again and try and "catch it" while the lights are or should I take it to a posh garage again and ask them to have a look? It still seems to be running fine.

Looks as if it cleared itself. Wait 'til next time...........

The Flashing cruise light, from other threads would seem to mean it was a fault that stops you using the cruise function whilst the CEL is still present.

I have tried the Scan Gauge on 2006STI JtM it will not work on the OBD11 port with out extra add on's worked fine on UK STI Impreza so got my money back . Have now fitted BC Racing coilover & gone back to 45 tyre size, alot more movement with the tyres speedo reading + 7 now not +10 also was geting a noise from the rear near side tyre which sounded like diff or wheel bearing on the way out , tyre had 5mm left but have been told this is a common problem with some high performance tyres also Toyo told the tyre supplyer the tyre pressure are not the same for UK roads as Japan?,set up onlt been on 1 week will report back after full test , setting on soft at 20 clicks 1 click being hard . springs are 4-5 & 5 comfort OK but before it when round corners like a go cart & shook your fillings out if you hit bump!!cost to date, coilover 630, fitting & Hunter alinement 250, Avon ZZ3 424 lets hope it has been worth It.Setting back to road not high speed as I found fast road took the outer edge off the tyres and cause the noise on the back tyre

Trevort, you have PM.
I guess your reply about the tyres was meant to go in another thread?

Do all errors light up the CEL? or just the most damaging/expensive? In other words will the reader show errors that have not caused the CEL to light up.

Bought it on ebay for $28 USD. Lots of UK sellers have it too. Find a V1.3 from a reputable seller. The ELM327 can still be hit or miss (mostly hit) being a replica chipset and not the actual ELM327. IF you want to be absolutely sure, you can buy from OBDkey.com (they're in the UK) but it's about 5x the price of the ebay one.

I am also looking for a stand alone OBD2, CAN reader for my 2010 Forester 2.0 NA, 4 EAT.
It must not only tell the code + small description of the error and a reset function too.
Please advice me.
Thanks
Wim
