Yes, it shows you
lots of stuff, much of which you just can't begin to imagine what it's for but Microsoft says that it has to be there. It's called DLL Hell.
The other Sysinternals stuff has a good rep as well. I've got Process Explorer running all the time. It will show the apps that are eating up the system, and it's also a nice way to kill off something that's gone out of control. Hhhmmm, maybe that would be a good program for Alan to try on his machine.

Likewise stuff that gets installed when you install a program. Always select Custom Installation and be on the lookout for prechecked check boxes having to do with other stuff they want to give you. If I accepted every toolbar that's been offered to me I'd have no room in my browser for the Web itself!
