Hi Chaps, Chapettes
I am looking at a 1999 forester turbo s with 74k fsh what should I look out for and the dealer is claiming that it has 240 bhp. It claims to be serviced very regular and had two cam belt chnages. I can't tell much from the pics apart from it having a stainless exhaust. I will be swapping my 2005 volvo s60 2.0t se for it which is a reliable car will the subaru be just as reliable. Thanks for you response

Hi and welcome,
If it is an EU/UK car a Forester S turbo then it certainly has not got 240hp. The S has around the 177 mark and the 240 relates to the Japanese Domestic Market ( referred to as JDM ) car, the S/tb or T/tb (auto only). The lettering on the boot is the clue and the F badge on the grill. UK cars can be remapped etc to up the power but it also needs exhaust/turbo work. Look at the service history carefully as cambelt service is 45k ( it is on my 1998 JDM T/tb) is important and should be noted. Subaru are usually reliable but nothing is guaranteed. Good history/reciepts etc are a good clue to careful ownership. Good luck and ask away. Cheers Brian

Shame no close-up pic of the rear !
Seems to have a 'turbo' badge stuck on top of the front bumper below the Subaru badge - is that usual...? *************************************** I do love the phrase: MUST NOT BE CONFUSED WITH THE USUAL RUBBISH ON SALE Confused with what rubbish - their other stock ..??

I agree the turbo badge on the front will be coming off if I take the car. Im going to speak with the dealer later when he has the receipts in front of him for the turbo etc.

See if he'll give you the VIN. That will enable identification & location of manufacture for sure.

It has headlight washers and leather seats ... it is not a JDM car but a UK S turbo and most likely not 240 bhp. JDM do not do headlight washers and leather.

Alloys are far too clean for the age and mileage too, so most likely resprayed IMO.

Is it feesable that if the turbo had been changed 240 bhp is possible and what should I ask him about regarding the work carried out on the engine.

If the whole exhaust has been replaced then I would somehow check that it has the right amount of Cats in it...otherwise you may get caught out by the new regs at MOT time...
Don't ask me how many it should have though

I would say it is more usual to see that on the back of a 911... it's a Porsche badge isn't it? As for the 240 bhp, I would want to see some evidence... although evidence is not always what it seems to be! If the docs stack up and the car drives properly that should hopefully tell you enough. Like Rich says, get yourself the VIN if they'll give it to you and you can probably find out a bit more.
