Default Advice on o2 sensor (1999 SF5 S Turbo)

Morning All

the forester threw an O2 Sensor fault code in its service, enquired as to a replacement from subaru and was quoted north of £160...ouch, got me wondering.

Anyone know of cheaper alternative?

hugely sceptical of of ebay specials, anyone used them?
Would a working used option be better? if so, any decent used parts dealers people can reccommend?

All the best
John

Buy one from a 1998 2.5 na impreza... It's the same one from bosche. Mine was 90 usd. Just make sure the plug is the same.

thanks for the help guys! loads of decent leads to follow! just looked at eurocarparts as ive used them before, and saw there were front and rear sensors. im not sure which was throwing the fault; the fault code was '32'

codes thrown up - 11, 12, 32

cheers

this is good news! as the other news was not cheap!

On euro car parts:
walker - 2 Sensors -
front and rear sensor: not too trusting of this now as you have pointed out only 1 on the subaru.
Denso - 1 sensor - no mention of front or rear, should be a good bet right?

...and is a lot less hassle to fit than the later 2 sensor model. 10mm 1/4" socket to remove the heat shield, pull the IC (2x12mm bolts plus the clamps on the hoses) and a 22mm ring spanner (undo the plug and slide the cable through the ring) and maybe, a hammer to assist the spanner as these sensors get 'baked' into place. Copper grease should be used on reassembly. Depending on the state of seizure, around 30 mins to an hour should do it, if you haven't done this before.

Took my mechanic less than 5 minutes to do, and from where i could see he didn't have to remove anything to access the sensor. Guess he was lucky or would the JDM SF be different?

when you say, later models have 2 sensors, how much later are we talking? after SF's or is there a cutoff point?

Great news about it being an easy job, i like them!
cheers

MY01 SF was the beginning, in line with the MY01 Impreza

Might have one kicking about......

just been for a look....

Ah, in fact I have 2:

1 is stamped Bosch A24-A71 028 82100, but has duff written on it, although I seem to recall it was supected as faulty and was so marked, but it turned out not to be an O2 sensor fault - usual helpful error codes :)

the other is stamped LSH24, then 0258 956 502, but I'm not sure of the 0258 bit, it might end 3, but I'm 90% certain it's an 8.

I think these both came from an MY01 WRX impreza if memory serves correctly, not sure if they're any use.

I would expect you to have only 1 sensor, and it should be in the downpipe just after the tubo, unless for some reason those wonderful people at Subaru decided to do it totally different on the MY99 Forester to the MY99 Impreza.

I had to cut down the heat shield when I fitted my TD04 because of the slight increase in turbo length, it's now smaller than the original part so perhaps the JDM has a similar sized shield which perhaps makes access easier. A mechanic should be able do this in 5 minutes and would have tools that most folks don't have, along with the experience. My views were geared towards someone who hadn't ventured into this area before. I doubt it would take 30 minutes but if the heat shield bolts and the O2 sensor are seized, it will take most first timers longer as a lot of us would be concerned about destroying the parts as we go. Garages usually have the tools to deal with this and quick access to spares if needed.

From working out using your 'MY Id chart' thing

the forester was registered on 20.05.1999 - making it an MY99? therefor even if i have totally balls'ed up my understanding, theres no way its an MY01, so im on 1 sensor, will buy now :D
