Default 1999 S Turbo - How to MOD?

Hi all,

I've just bought a 1999 (T) Forester S Turbo, the previous owner tells me that it is the 172bhp model, it has a also been converted to run on LPG since 2005, I've just got 260miles out of 30 quids worth!

I've owned a landy and an evo in the past and thought that I would settle for something in the middle.

It is totally standard apart from a bailey dump valve.

What performance mods would you guys on here recommend to try and get it faster and better at handling?

Ta

Hello and welcome to the forum ...

There's plenty of info on here on that topic if you try the search.
As a starter try this one:

Superchip or ECU mapping

welcome, let me be the first to say modifications are equal to how much you want to spend.

Theres plenty of info on the site, but the usual places to start are the exhaust and geting more boost.

and a good bit of advice would be:

power is only as useful as the brakes that stop it!

...and upgrade the tyres and rear ARB so you can go around corners after you've accelerated with more boost and braked with better brakes!

Thumbs up

Hi all,

Thanks for the good response.

Shall I:
1) Upgrade the Exhaust? Nothing too loud.
2) Upgrade the turbo to a TD04
3) Have an ECUtek remap
4) Apexi AVC-R boost controller?

I do a lot of motorway miles so want the option of switching between fun and sensible if possible.

Will the LPG conversion affect what mods I can do?

Also, is there any point in using super unleaded as a fuel if I am already running LPG through the engine?

All help, ideas and product suggestions gratefully recieved.

AVC-R will give you the option of switching between boost levels for sure, but it may be a bit OTT for yours. All this will achieve though is to tame your right foot, which you could easily do yourself without the Apexi. It removes the temptation though if you switch to a lower-boost map. I'm sure someone will pipe up with an easier (cheaper) way of achieving more boost.

The other 3 suggestions are the usual routes people follow yes, but whether they are still applicable for LPG conversions I would be guessing if I answered.

Rich

Great place this is!

Don - Thanks for the link - great stuff!

So can you guys recommend the brand/type of kit to get for the following?

Exhaust de-cat - Cheap and not too loud would be good.
Brakes - 4 pot discs? and EBC pads?
Turbo - TD04 or sumfink different?

As I have the UK spec model which I believe is running 172bhp, what gains can I realistically expect with the above mods and will it be a big improvement?

I'm thinking that it may be best to run on LPG for motorways with a low boost and run on V-max for play time and high boost

Thanks again
