Within a few months of mounting the WRG2-SUV's (SUV version = 103 load index and reinforced sidewalls) I knew I'd selected too heavy duty of a tire for the light weight Forester. I knew from the ride quality. But they did well in snow, slush, so-so on ice, okay in rain, and real good handling in dry. Five years and 30,000 miles later they are still on and while they have good tread depth left and the siping still looks good, they have gotten very skiddy in the rain. I've played with inflation level on these puppies since day one and the best seems to be 28 or 29 front, and 26 or 27 rear. Sounds low but remember the load index and the stiffer sidewalls. These tires are made for 6000 lb SUV's.
So anyhow, it's nearing time for them to go, before winter comes, even though they technically probably have another 20 - 25,000 miles of life if basing only upon tread depth. It's like the compound is hardening up or something. Too often in rain lately they are skidding both laterally and more recently longitudinally-- on wet asphalt in active rain when the person in front braked aggressively my ABS activated way too easily and narrowly avoided rear ending them.
I honestly believe it's not the tire's fault it's mine for putting heavy truck tires on instead of the passenger car version of WR's like I should have.
So I am looking for something to replace them with in the next couple months. Discount Tire now has a store here so that may be an option.
They are 225/60VR17 and I want to stay the same size.
