Impreza Struts on SG Foresters - All you need to know

If you are looking at swapping Impreza struts on to your SG Forester (03-08) PLEASE read this carefully.
***If you are interested in installing coilovers then the ONLY thing you need to know is that any 02-07 WRX coilovers will bolt right up to your Forester, no spacers of any kind needed***

THESE ARE THE ONLY POSSIBLE SETUP CONFIGURATIONS SO THIS IS YOUR PARTS LIST
Possible Setup Configurations:
02-03 WRX fitment struts
02-03 springs
02-07 front strut mounts
02-03 rear strut mounts
saggy butt spacers
.................................................. ............
02-03 WRX fitment struts
04-07 springs
02-07 front strut mounts
04-07 rear strut mounts
TiC Scooby921 spacer
saggy butt spacers
.................................................. ............
04-07 WRX or 04 STI fitment struts
04-07 springs
02-07 front strut mounts
04-07 rear strut mounts
saggy butt spacers
.................................................. ............
05-07 STI fitment struts
04-07 springs
02-07 front strut mount
04-07 rear strut mount
structural modification to lower mounting holes (drilling holes to fit 5x114.3 hub)
saggy butt spacers
.................................................. ............

Top Hats
This is where the most confusion is had for the strut swap.

Fronts: 02-07 WRX/STI and 03-08 Forester (they are all the same fitment)

Rears:02-03 WRX rear top hats are different from 04-07 WRX/STI and 03-08 Forester rear strut mounts.

***If you are swapping any 02-03 WRX rear strut into your SG Forester and are using 04-07 springs and mounts you will need the Scooby921 strut spacer, for your rear struts only, made by TiC.***If you do not buy the spacers then it will result in damage to the strut and eventually catastrophic failure. They simply sit on the strut shaft and keep the mount flat when installed.

These spacers are necessary only when using 04-07 rear strut mounts on 02-03 struts. If you are using 02-03 strut mounts you can simply use 02-03 WRX rear springs.

TiC Scooby921 strut spacers

Springs
Fronts: You can use any 02-07 WRX or STI front springs as they are all the same throughout these years.

Rears: 02-03 WRX rear springs are different from 04-07 WRX/STI rear springs.

Struts
Any 02-07 WRX and 04 STI strut will fit into a SG Forester with no modification.
If you are looking to install 05-07 STI struts then structural modification to the lower mounting bolt holes on the strut will have to be done due to the hub difference. (5x100 to 5x114.3)

Strut mount spacers:
These are completely different from the Scooby921 spacer listed above.
These are used to lift the body of your vehicle off of the strut top by a specific amount. When using WRX or STI struts a 3/8" spacer in the rear is the most commonly used with no spacer in the front. This is due to the struts being designed for sedans as opposed to our heavier Forester SUVs.

They look like this.

Common companies for necessary parts:

Scooby921 Spacers - Turn in Concepts: (Only purchased here)
http://turninconcepts.com/suspension...t-spacers.html

Strut mount spacers:
Subtle Solutions
Whiteline
Paranoid Fabrications

Strut Mounts: (Tire rack or Summit Racing seem to be the cheapest)
KYB
Subaru OE (made by KYB so go with aftermarket KYB)
STI Group N

Struts: (Tire rack or Summit Racing seem to be the cheapest)
KYB GR2 or AGX (GR2 are direct replacement)(AGX is adjustable dampening, made only for 02-03 WRX)
OE Subaru WRX or STI
Tokico D-spec
Koni
Ohlins

Springs:
Too many to list. Find a spring rate and nominal drop that best suits the strut you choose.

Also, my comparison between OE Forester struts w/ Swift springs...OE 04 STI struts...and 02-03 KYB AGX struts w/ STI springs is here:
Swift vs. OE STI vs. KYB AGX

Sketchy yes, but look in the background. The wheels are under the body. Safety first!

It's just a picture I found on google images. I apologize for the sub par safety standards that are portrayed.

I'm not well versed in coilovers but mounting wise I would feel safe in saying that any 02-07 WRX or 04 STI application would work. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, one last verification. From what I'm reading here and what's posted in this thread,
Will X shocks fit with Y springs on my Z model? - NASIOC, it's strongly implied or perhaps straight out stated that ANY OEM STI spring from 04-07 will fit the agx struts.

Quote:
Strut: KYB AGX
Springs: All springs will fit. However, 02-03 springs must use 02-03 top hats. 04+ springs must use 04 and up top hats AND a washer from TiC.
Models: This strut assembled properly with springs and tophats will fit, 02+ WRX, and 04 STi. This strut assembled properly will not fit 05+ STis due to the front knuckle redesign. My understanding is that the rears will fit 05+ up STis.
I didn't see anything that flat out stated it, or rather, I guess I did, but something about the wording weirded me out.

BUT for a set of AGX struts, ANY OEM STI spring between 04-07 can be used (front and rear) with the SG Top hats as long as in the rear you use the TiC Spacer?

The section right above that for springs breaks it down to fronts and rears and what all you can use. To answer your question yes you are correct.

Perfect! Thanks! Widening out the range of years of the STI springs is really helping with the search for a set!
