Front trailing arm's bushing leaking silicone fluid. Replace with polyurethane?

So, the trailing arm bushing on our '02 Forester's driver's front LCA is leaking weird, thick, black silicone goop. Rather than just replacing this one (dealer quoted $115), I would like to replace both sides with a polyurethane bit instead. Can someone please point me toward a Whiteline / Energy suspension bushing set that will work? These seem to be a difficult bushing to come across, as most sites label their trailing arm bushings "rear trailing arm bushing" which..... could mean at the rear of the front LCA or the actual rear trailing arm. Thanks!

Track control or Lower control arm, not trailing arms on the front....they don't 'trail'!

So LCA it is.

98 s-turbo now breaking for spares :icon_cry:, now driving a BMW 320D M-sport :raspberry:

Many guys have done the polybush thing in the control arms because they were so much less expensive than the OEM parts but, for me anyway, the ride was absolutely awful afterwards. The roads over here are not the best anyway but the polybushes increase noise as well as stiffness so if comfort is high on your list, it might be smarter and more economical to just bite the bullet and get the jelly filled Subaru items. I ordered the OEM bushes an hour after fitting the plastic ones, they really were that bad for me so it worked out very costly but as I can't see your location, perhaps your decision should be down to the roads you drive on and whether performance or comfort is more important? The Subaru parts handle fine but the firmer polybushes make everything 'tighter'.

Thanks for the reply, that's good to hear. We're currently living in Houston, TX & the roads are absolutely terrible, so I think we may be going for a new oem bit. One final question, when I got a quote from the dealership, they recommended replacing both sides at the same time, so that one side does not "put more pressure" on the other. This seemed pretty ridiculous to me, but I figured I'd ask. Any thoughts?

Also, I just noticed that the local dealership quoted $106/side, while subarugenuineparts.com has them for $16/side. At least if both sides should be replaced it won't be that painful....

I'm going to be replacing my front LCA rear bushing; do I need to do both at the same time if the other is not leaking?

I think these are the transverse link bushing that everyone is referring to. (transverse link bushing is how Subaru refers to them)

Personally, I don't think it is necessary to replace in pairs, but I still would replace both and keep the good one as a spare.

So if I'm ordering the part I look it up under transverse link bushing?

When I do a search on that, it seems like it only refers to the rear. Are the front and rear bushings the same?

Just be sure that is what it is leaking! I was about to replace both of my front ones on my 04 XT because I too thought they were leaking a thick, black fluid. Guess what? Both of my inner CV Boots were torn, and flung that black grease all over those bushings, bushings were perfectly fine. Just FYI.

Sorry for the slow response, yep the transverse link is only the rear bushing (the rear bushing of the front lower control arm that is). It is the only fluid filled one and is the one the OP was referring to. Sorry if I added confusion to your situation, I didn't realize this was a resurrected thread.

I think your 2000 Forester would use p/n 20201FC100 for the right and 20201FC110 for the left.

No need to replace both. I replaced the passenger side since it was leaking, and the driver side is still fine. Replace as needed.

Here's what the dealer replaced on my 05 FXT with under 91k miles:

sway bar links #20470SA001
Lower control arm bushings #20201FC120/FC130

Can anybody tell me if its perfectly normal for this part to fail under 100k?
Car being driven gently.
