Noob here. I'm soon to pull and rebuild the motor in my 04 Forester X with 215k on it. This will be my first motor rebuild and I'm doing as much as I can myself. I'll have a shop resurface the heads and possibly have the cylinders honed, but probably not bored over. Unsure if I should have a valve job done, or to buy new guides, any recommendation?
The cams are going off to Delta to be reground for the lower numbered torque grind, 1000 or 1500, whatever its called.
I just want to check with you guys that I'm ordering the right stuff and that I'm not going to be missing anything. I could just order a master rebuild kit, but I'm not sure if I really need to change out the pistons, should I get new pistons? The car isn't overheating or anything, but it's only $100 for new ones. I'm also unsure of the gasket quality that comes with the master kit on Rockauto.
I did the the water pump and timing belt around 180k so those parts should be good. I'm getting a new power steering pump, and motor and trans mounts at the same time. Along with new Whiteline steering rack bushings because currently the motor is leaking all on the rack and causing the bushings to slip and make steering sloppy.
So starting out I'm going to use this head gasket kit
Amazon.com: Fel-Pro Hs26170Pt1 Head Gasket Set: Automotive
I think I also need this lower set
Amazon.com: Fel-Pro CS26170 Conversion Gasket Set: Automotive
And these are the bearings, please let me know if these are what I need.
This is the main bearing set

And here are the rod bearings

So is this enough to remove the heads, bearings and reassemble without missing anything?
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated as I've never taken a motor apart before, but I'm fairly confident in my ability to do so, and I should have another vehicle to drive until I get this project finished. I don't know hardly anything about what greases or other small parts I'll need for the build. I realize I have a lot to learn but I really look forward to it. I'm hoping all this work will see me through a trouble free 300k.
