Default Installing Shortblock, engine ready to be stripped

So, I bought a Rebuilt Shortblock. And I just pulled the engine out of the car last night. Currently the old engine is just chilling on an engine stand.

Any advice of stuff to do, or stuff I should do while tearing it apart and putting it back together? Any problems others had that I should be warned about? :)

I was thinking of throwing the heads in a bucket of degreaser to clean them.

Discuss...

if your installing older heads on a fresh block you should have the heads checked and resurfaced.

Yeah, at the very least use a certified straight edge a 0.002" shim to check the heads for flatness. Any deviation from that and they need to be machined flat.

Do you have a shop manual for referring to when setting the timing? That can be a real PITA, so it's best to make sure you have the procedure down before you start tearing down. You also need to determine where in the stroke the new shortblock is before installing the cams.

Use lots of assembly lube when putting the engine back together. Moving metal parts should not make contact without a thin layer of assembly lube.

You also might want to fill it with break in oil when you fire it up for the first time

"Rebuilt" as in Cummins remanufactured shortblock?

As others have said get the heads checked out, or even rebuilt. A decent valve job, seals and shaving now may be money well saved down the road.

I have multiple service manuals. 2 versions in PDF and a Haynes hardcopy. I've done heads and engines a couple of times before, but never a boxer engine. I was seeing if there was any "subarus are know to have this break, so replace it now!" things, or "be careful with that bolt". I have a lot of rust corrosion on it, so i'm def thinking of replacing the fuel lines under the intake manifold. Do yall know where I could find those?

It's a remanufactured shortblock by a small company I found in Cali, all they do are Subaru engines.

This is actually the first time working on a flat 4 engine, so I'm surprised and impressed with the engineering.

Man, I wouldn't slap as-is used heads on a new short block, sheesh. As a minimum I'd have the valves done, have them decked for flatness, replace the cam oil seals, replace the valve stem seals, check the valve guides, replace the cam bearings and check the springs and retainers.

Well, got the head inspected, and I'm about to put it back together tomorrow morning. I'm only keeping the vehicle for a total of 9-12 months more before I upgrade to a newer Subby, so I'm not messing with the valves. At least I got the heads cleaned. It look pretty now. Not sure if I'll bent new fuel lines or run rubber lines with a protective cover.

The guys at Delta Cams said that they have repatedly seen the valve seals last 250k miles so I wouldn't worry about those. New seals are a good idea but you'll probably have to put new ones in anyway since the block has been redone.

Engine DONE! woot. runs great! going through break in now. And the best thing, only one code was thrown (I forgot to plug in the coolant temp sensor).
