I posted this a couple of weeks ago but stated some wrong information. I had the Crannk angle sensor and the Cam position sensor mixed up.
Here goes again.
02 Forester 2.5l EJ251 cranks but wont start.
It has spark but no pulse to the injectors. It started with a spray of fuel to the air intake then stopped straight away.
Fuel pump is working.
NRMA guy told me it was probably the crank angle sensor so I replaced it but still no start.
After a bit of research and testing I found that there is no continuity on the ground wire that clips onto the Cam position sensor.
Is this likely to be the issue and if so how do I go about fixing it. I believe that this ground wire may go back to the computer.
Any suggestions
I didnt check the pressure of the pump but the NRMA guy put a Nord light (I think he called it) into the connector that goes on the injector and there is no injector pulse. The pump primes when you turn ignition on and I disconectet the fuel line and filled a third of a beer bottle with one quick crank of the key.
You can check the FB-19 fuse (interior fuse block), but since the fuel pump is working it's probably not that. Work through the diag procedure (attached) which should pin point your issue.
OK. After a few hours of testing sensors, relays, wires and fuses thanks to diagrams supplied by Mook and Bobby but I am no closer to a solution. I was initially getting a code for crank angle sensor so replaced it with a new one then got a code for cam position sensor. Tested the Cam sensor and it seems good but will replace it tomorrow anyway. I also bought a ECU from the wreckers and still no go. I am starting to wonder if the issue could be caused by the immobilizer. My son lost the Key with the remote about 6 months ago so I got him an aftermarket key without remote. If the transponder in the key failed would this be the cause of the no injector pulse?
I found a thread from 2013 (I think) by a member called SILENTGUY with the same symtoms but it seemed that nobody had any suggestions to offer him and he went silent and didn't post how it was fixed. Has anyone else had the same issue?
Sounds like you're playing electronics whack-a-mole. I didn't realize that technical resources were region specific, but maybe it's the physical differences between RH/LH drive. Unless you have a mate that has a STIS subscription for AUDM Subaru's I'd suggest contacting Subaru Australia directly to help narrow the search.
Yep. Pretty much now that you put it that way. The wiring harnesses look too complicated for me to pull apart and put back together. I will pick up a Cam sensor this arvo and if it doesn't start, it will send it to Subaru on a truck.
I took the key to the locksmith to test the transponder and his machine couldn't detect a Transponder. He pulled the transponder out and it is broken. I will get a mobile locksmith out ASAP to cut me 2 new keys and hopefully the car will start.
I got 2 new keys with remote entry cut today for $440. and she is running like a dream again. Am I allowed to give the mobile auto locksmiths a plug on this site coz that is a lot less than Subaru wanted to charged for one key.
Speaking of Subaru, I emailed them asking if a faulty transponder would result in a condition of Spark but no Injector Pulse and got a reply stating that nobody from Subaru Australia could answer that question and that I should take the vehicle to a Subaru service centre.
Thanks Bobby,
That explains why nobody on the forum had experienced that combination of symptoms before.
I obviously replaced a few parts that I probably didnt need to right away but the car fires up after 2 cranks now.
I'm out of pocket about $1k but still reckon it would have cost more to have the car towed to Subaru and have them fix it.
Thanks again for the info you and Mook sent, it helped eliminate a lot of things that weren't the problem and thats all a part of diagnosing faults. At the end of the day I enjoyed working with a mechanic and learning a bit about auto electrics so I'm happy with the outcome.
I reccommend Mr AutoKey if you're in Sydney or on the Central Coast and need keys cut for your car.
after reading this, man am i glad my 03 doesnt have any of that garbage... plain old keys... got a pair of em cut from my local subaru dealer for $12 with tax...
