just got my hands on a completely stock 99 forester L and I want to build it up but keep it NA.. just wondering if anyone knows what kind of power difference i will be looking at or what kind of a 1/4 mile time difference from stock might be.
Seeing how it moves at half the speed of smell now, you can expect slightly faster than that.
In all seriousness, getting power out of a NA motor is expensive with little returns. You might drop your quarter time by a second, and it's probably already in the very high teens.
Upgrade rods, get higher compression pistons, upgrade fuel system, get standalone engine management, get ridiculous cams, get new valves, get head reworked & ported, get a new exhaust and intake, grab new intake manifold, grab new exhaust manifold. Everyone here I've seen will tell you to stay away from NA, but if you like to work on your vehicle and don't just want to buy a pre-made package, go for it. Seems like a lot of people are forgetting the love for working on a car, even if it's not the most practical thing. NA is always expensive and power gains aren't much. One company Xcesspseed or something odd had an Impreza with 300hp, but I've read it's not really streetable, and not worth the cost.
The best thing I've seen so far is to swap in a H6 motor (eg33, ez30D) because those are 200hp from the factory. This is all from the failing memory I have, so fact check me on any of these.
@detuned I want to do NA first for the fun of building and then after it is built it will be turbo ready i would think or by that time i will have the money to do a swap
Like the others have said, NA can be really fun. When you bump up compression in a built motor you cannot turbo it, or the motor will literally blow apart. For a turbo you want lower compression pistons. If you have the motor built, just swap pistons and cams, depending on how you've built it. For a fun peppy build, I'd go NA and just do it mildly. For a serious all out car, you'll want to go turbo.
Just remember what your purpose is. Driving a race car on your daily commute sucks, and driving your commuter car on the race track sucks.
Itll still be slow, no doubt, but will it have a fun powerband if you do everything to benefit one side or the other. I put in delta 1000 grinds & UEL headers with full exhaust and all that extra low end makes for a fun offroader. If you wanted to get crazy, you could find some ej22 heads and make it a high comp NA motor
I'd say drop in an EZ30D from an 01-03 Outback and enjoy the Porsche exhaust note and extra 50hp in a car that is 600lbs lighter than the original Outback...
The EZ30D won't have a timing belt or head gaskets to worry about having to replace all the time either.
