Default Where do you put your key?

Please help, this is a serious question.

When I go to the ocean, or rafting, or to a waterpark, or ... I am able to tie my car key to my bathing suit strings. This way, I know that the key is with me, the car is not stolen, etc.

I was able to do this because I have a 2005 legacy and I was able to get a key cut at a local hardware store.

Now, I have a brand new 2009 FORESTER 2.5X Premium with the fancy key that cannot be replicated. I assume that with the electronics, that the key can not get wet.

Soooo.... what do you guys do to have your forester locked for the day and the key with you?

Thank you in advance, Symboltech

An eBay search on "waterproof key" (without the quotes) produced a few possibilities. Here's one. Beach Travel Waterproof Neck Tote Bag Key Holder, - eBay (item 370079943459 end time Aug-29-08 12:41:38 PDT)

Though the seller doesn't specify size, it looks to be too big for tying to bathing suit strings (It can hold sunglasses!), but it would work fine around the neck for activities other than swimming.

A few more:
WATERPROOF CONTAINER AIRTIGHT CASE ID KEYS MONEY BEACH - eBay (item 350091120155 end time Aug-28-08 13:18:12 PDT)

WATERPROOF CONTAINER AIRTIGHT CASE ID KEYS MONEY TRAVEL - eBay (item 330264840422 end time Aug-30-08 21:59:04 PDT)

More from the second seller at eBay Store - Eureka Trading Company: Hiking Camping Water: RECHARGABLE LANTERN OUTDOOR LIGHT CAMPING EMERGENCY

I guess I would duct tape it against my car somewhere. You should see if you can get a non-electric key copied anyways, though, as it will likely open the doors without starting the engine.

get an old skool key cut.

This key will ONLY unlock the doors. It will NOT start the car.

Hide the key with the chip in it somewhere in the car (like in the spare tire well)

I asked the same question to SOA...

Dear Mr. Duffin,
Thank you for your patience while I researched your inquiry.
Our Technical Services department has advised that your key is able to be replicated. Your local Subaru dealer can contact their Parts Information Coordinator in Atlanta for assistance.

However, none of our keys are able to get wet. Apparently, because they are laser cut, getting wet is not an option.

I'm sorry that I wasn't able to provide you with a positive response. You may wish to contact one of our Partners, perhaps the Kayak Association. Maybe they can offer you some helpful tips regarding this situation.

Sincerely,
Kelly Shinault
Subaru of America, Inc.

I don't understand how being laser cut has anything to do with it....

Me neither. Let's assume that Kelly Shinault has a degree in some liberal arts field, perhaps corporate communications or the like!

This thread inspired me to buy a couple of key-sized containers from Eureka Trading on eBay for use when kayaking. They arrived today, really quickly. Look nice.

I had the same problem on my Discovery. I bolted a Stanley brand key lockbox onto the frame. I got it at my hardware store and it has a 4 digit code. Check to make sure your fob fits though. I'll be doing this soon on my MY06 FXT and will post pics if still interested.

when i was at Lowe's the other day, i saw a magnetic box that you would put underneath your car and it would store your keys.

i was thinking about getting one, but i have keys that you can get wet, so i just put it inside my wetsuite or tie it to my trunks.

If the mechanical key will unlock the doors, why not just keep the electric key in the glove box?

If I have to hide my key someplace, I usually place it inside of the strut collar in the wheel well.

You could also get one of the above mentioned lock boxes at lowes/home depot for $30 (they are in the same aisle as mailboxes and exterior door locks here) and just clip it over the door handle/roof rack cross bar/trailer hitch/etc and lock the key inside. Shouldn't be a problem.

What he said...I surf all the time and have a regular key cut from my chipped key..I don't turn on the alarm and just lock my doors and keep the regular key in my leash pocket..the only thing is that when you open the car I believe you need to put in the chipped key or the alarm goes off (if I remember)
