Is Subaru owned by Ford?

Hi all,
I was telling my brother that I am going to purchase a 2009 Forester and he said Subaru is now owned by Ford, along with Volvo, Mazda, etc.
Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

Not true. Partially owned by GM for awhile but I think they may have sold off most, if not all, of their interest.

Ford is selling all their 'other' brands, not buying anything.

Thanks Ddavidv

Thanks. I am glad to hear it's not true because as a matter of personal preference, I would not be interested in buying a Ford product and this news from my brother was a bit disappointing to learn. So I'm glad it's not the case.

Yes, GM sold it's shares a while back and Toyota picked them up. Supposedly the two are collaborating on some projects, including I believe a small sporty car for Toyota. Look in the news and rumors subforum and you'll find threads about it.

Subaru is owned by Fuji Heavy Industries, and Toyota owns a 12% (I think) share in Subaru.

I still get fooled occasionally when I see a Ford Escape in the rear view mirror, thinking that it's a fellow Forester, but that's the only connection I know of. As for GM's former involvement, that's what brought the Saabaru to humankind. It sure must have been a surprise to Saab mechanics when they suddenly had to learn Subaru! Must have been a surprise to Saab owners too.

Don't forget GM sold a rebranded Forester in the middle east. That's a weird feeling in the gut, seeing a Forester with a GM emblem!

There is actually nothing *that* wrong with Ford--they have the best quality of all the domestics these days. But you brother is waaay off the mark here and you might do well to not look to him for car information

Ah yes, the Chevrolet Forester. It's big in India. Apparently Chevy is a long established marque there, just like the "Buicks" that GM sells in China.

MarkyD, our beloved and greatly missed former tech director, renamed us the "Chevrolet Forester Owners Forum" as his April Fools joke a few years back.

There's a 2007 review of the Indian model here. It makes no mention whatever of the word Subaru! And here's a pic from another site.

Not only isn't Ford owning any of Subaru (thank God), it also just gave up it's controlling share of Mazda and is trying to sell Volvo..........

Welcome to Chevrolet

This seems to be the '03-'04 2.0l SOHC model with the 125 hps.
It is no longer portrayed in the current Indian lineup.

Was it assembled in India?

Eeeewww I think I just threw up a little in my mouth... it could be the hangover, or the GM badge on a Forester... either way, I've seen enough!

As someone already pointed out, stay clear from your brother with anything having to do with four wheels and moves people or things.
