Default A reminder that Subaru's are not invincible.

A terrible accident happened by me early this morning, absolutely terrible. He lost control on a local highway (the roads were pretty slick this morning and he was on summer tires) The STi split into 2 and everyone was killed except the driver (who only had a learners permit)

Four teens killed in horrific car crash on Long Island; teen at wheel only had learner's permit - NY Daily News

Just terrible. STi's and learner's permits don't mix. Add slick roads to the mix and you get this. Thoughts go out to the family and friends...

That is really bad.

Remind me of the accident a few years ago at John Travolta backyard.

Horrible...

Does NY allow learner's permit holders to carry passengers?

Unhappy

Sad indeed, but it can still happen to experienced drivers, properly equipped cars and any one of us, just to add a sobering thought for all of us to consider.

We get far too many like this one here in OZ too.
Usually inexperience and excessive speed does the trick.

Must be really hard on the driver having to deal with what happened.

A learners permit in NY only allows you to drive with someone over 21 who has a valid drivers license, and with no other passengers. so he's screwed and he has to live with that, terrible..

plus , I believe during designated hours of the day.

But can't you drive with a learner's permit if you prove yourself to be a working minor?

He must have been doing insane speeds to do that to the new STi.

Jesus christ, poor family members and friends.

which of any of those choices seemed like a good idea?? a learners permit + STi + speed = disaster.

such a shame that four people are dead and that kid has a terrible burden to live with.

Unless the laws on NY have changed, yes. But you can only drive to and from work. Otherwise, like ConnorLug said you have to have a licensed driver that's 21 or older with you and like rage-wrx mentioned, only designated hours of the day.

The turn they talk about "Dead Man's Curve" is a pretty hairy turn too. Back in my dumber days, whenever I had to take that turn I would FLY through in my old celica rallycross car, and even with actual track time and knowledge, I really had to be ready for that turn or I would just Have to take it easy. It kinda sneaks up on you REAL quick. I can't even imagine how fast he must have been going to do THAT with a car that normally handles 1000x better than my celica did, even with the work I put into it.

Sad to hear his friends paid the price and he has to live with such a horrible mistake that I'm sure will be in the back of his head for a long long time. I hope their families get through these rough times as best as they can.

Just goes to show, straight A student or not a new driver is a new driver. I think the U.S. needs to look into how some other countries issue licenses. In my opinion it's just too easy to get anyone on the road here.
