Default Best and worst memories

Had in N.J. in early 1950's: 46 Chevy Coupe, 48 Ford coupe, 50, 51 Pontiac sedans. Loved the Pontiacs. Came to Calif. in 56 Rambler. Sold when needed money. Bare transportation: 58 Plymouth, 57 Rambler when going to graduate school. Hippie days: 62 Ford Econoline van--awful seats, gave me backaches. 60 Mercedes 190SL. Great car. Rode out tornado in Oklahoma, dog on my lap. Sold when needed money.
79 Ford Courier. Tough little truck, but 4 cyls. had hard time getting over Rocky Mtns. Then got series of 6 cyl. Rangers with camper shells to carry dogs. Last one, a 99, burned up Aug. 5 on Rt. 405 in Long Beach when an idiot dropped a futon and set it on fire.
61 Mercedes 190SL. Great so far. Only 21,000 actual miles, documented. Ford Escorts, 93 and 99, have been good to us. 1966 Ford Mustang Pony convertible. Restored it. Drove like a covered wagon. Much prefer Mercedes 190SL for size, beauty, engineering and handling.
Got 2007 Forester after Ford Ranger burned up.

The Forester is car #5 in my 20 years of driving.

1) 1978 Chevy Malibu - bought it for $1200 in '86 and spent $4000 keeping it running
2) 1985 Buick LeSabre - parents old car
3) 1996 VW Jetta GL - my first new car
4) 2000 Dodge Dakota - very useful vehicle but 13 mpg hurts
5) 2004 Forester XT

My favorite would have to be the XT. I think everyone has fond memories of their first car but I have a few too many memories of the Malibu breaking down for it to make #1.

1.) 1939 Ford Prefect, bought it for £10 in 1963, kept it for 18 months and sold it for £10. Prior to me buying the previous owner had spent £40 on a new engine (side valve). Memorable as my first car, 3 speed no sychro on first, on/off clutch. As my father said, 'if you can drive this car you can drive any car'. cable brakes, very vague steering, very live rear axle and no heater.
2.) 1953 Ford Prefect, same driveline as above but hydraulic brakes with better handling.
3.) 1953 Standard Vanguard 2200cc straight 4, basically a tank with awful handling and very thirsty.
4.) 1953 Vauxhall Wyvern 1500+ cc straight 4 typical Vauxhall rust bucket of that era.
5.) 1954 Vauxhall Velox 2.5 straight 6 (the bulbous 1 not the finned version). first car with a radio (valve) and decent performance. Still a rust bucket.
6.) 1963 Ford Cortina 1200 straight 4, first modern car bought in 1965. Reasonably reliable except for engine which required main bearing/big end replacement at 30,000 miles. A design fault with this engine (3 main bearing).
Good heater and 40 mpg. Better rust record than Vauxhalls of same era.
7.) 1966 Citroen DS21 Pallas 2200cc straight 4. Bought this car on a whim as offered to me through a friend for trade in price. Typically idiosychratic Citroen with hyropneumatic suspension and semi-auto gear change and all the other complications associated with this car, but no self-cancelling indicators! Tendancy for rust, sold on after 6 months as too expensive to run.
8.) 1966 Ford Cortina GT 1500 (Mk.1). In my view one of the best Fords made, with good performance from the 5 bearing engine/Weber carb and good reliability. Stolen from a public car park and never recovered.
9.) 1972 Ford Granada 2.5 V6. Good reliable car let down somewhat by throbby V6. Stolen by scumbags from same car park as above and wrecked.
10.) 1972 Volvo 141 2 litre auto. Not a bad car but too soft suspension and tendancy to rust.
11.) 1976 Ford Granada Ghia 3 litre auto. As my other Granada but just better all round, smoother engine.
12.) 1979 Vauxhall Carlton Estate 2 litre, quite a good reliable car, still probs with body corrosion.
13.) 1981 Ford Granada Estate Ghia auto 2.8 litre Mk.II. First car with a/c. Good car, but I never thought the 'Cologne' V6 was as torquey as the 'Essex' V6 so engine wise inferior to my last Granada.
14.) 1987 Vauxhall Senator 3 litre auto. In my view the best Vauxhall range of cars ever made, with excellent performance (better than the equivalent Ford) and good equipment level, an underated car with superb reliability. Only downside was the a/c design, the condenser required repair/change almost annually. Prone to corrosion due to position in car and salty UK roads.
15.) 1991 Vauxhall Senator 3 litre 24v auto. Comments as above. Had this car 8 years 110,000 miles, only repair was water pump replacement. Same probs with a/c.
16.) 1999 Mitsubishi Gallant VR4 4 wheel drive tiptronic. 3 years with this car, just perfect with no probs at all. Climate a/c always works. Coverted to Jap reliability.
17.) 2004 Subaru Forester STI 320bhp. As above re reliability. I've had this car 13 months so far and covered 10,000 miles (20,000 on car now). Nothing to report except very pleased with design and bulletproof feel.

Default How many ?

Lada 1200 (rough, uncomfortable but dependable)
Lada 1300 (rough, uncomfortable but dependable)
Lada 1300 S (rough, uncomfortable but dependable)
Fiat Ritmo 1.8 lt diesel (i could have done the electronic-engineer examination with the experience this car gave me)
Lada 1500 SW (rough, uncomfortable but dependable, but too weak to pull a box of tissues)(russian fiat-clones)
Subaru Legacy SW 1.8 lt. 2WD (great machine, had to go because of 300.000 km and a rattling gearbox)
Subaru Justy 1.0 ECVT (incredible little thing, that held for 120.000 km)
Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon 2.2 lt.GX (strong, dependable and 325.000 km old and a bit frayed at the edges)
Subaru Vivio 1.0 ECVT (wifes car, like the Justy, dependable safe and suprisingly good on a daily basis)
Subaru Forester S-turbo (Strong AT machine with a well-powered engine that pulls around our holiday-house ((1300 kg)) like if it's nothing!)

The last one (still in posession) was the most fun. Took us & a caravan-trailer everywhere and drives like a razor!
