Mini
VW Beetle Hillman Minx Ford Escort Vauxhall Cavalier Coupe' Opel Rekord Estate (wagon) VW Golf GTi 3 dr. VW Golf GTi 5 dr. Volvo 740 auto Estate (1988 - 2002) Volvo V70 Estate Forester XT Auto The Volvo 740 is the best car I have ever owned: comfortable, plenty of glass and visibility, tiny turning circle and great maneuverabilityfor the size of the car, space for everything you wish to carry, steel bumpers mounted on shock absorbers. Replaced it with the V70: Poor turning circle due to front wheel drive, steeply raked windscreen giving bad reflections, poor visibility compared with the 740. Good for motorways, no good for town and country. I bought the Forester (2004 XT auto ) for a return to greater practicality, and it fits the bill. |

Wife and I do about 35K a year between us.
We have done more in some past years. In the order I bought them (more or less): 1964 Corvair Monza 4 dr, poweglide, car I learned to drive in. 1973 Vega wagon, auto 1976 MGB, 4 spd (There were actually automatic Bs for a couple of years!) 1965 Corvair Monza 2dr, powerglide 1976 Civic 1500 CVCC, 4 spd 1970 Nova 2 dr, 230 six, powerglide 1976 Nova 2 dr, 250 six, auto 1967 Toyota Corona, 4 dr, 4 spd 1974 Spitfire, 4 cyl, 4 spd 1967 Datsun 1600 4 cyl, 4 spd 1973 W115 220, gas 4 cyl, auto 1978 W123 240D, diesel 4 cyl, auto (Had two of these, slow, slow, slow.) 1981 Vanagon, 4 cyl, 4 spd 1976 280Z 2+2, 5 spd, steered like a truck 1988 W201, 190, 4 cyl, gas, auto 1986 Honda Civic Wagon, 4 cyl, 5 spd (Had two of these, great cars) 1984 BMW 733i, 4 drs, 5 spd 1996 Ody, 4 cyl, auto 1997 Accord coupe, 5 spd 1997 Aerostar, 3 liter V-6, 2WD, auto 1999 Accord 4 dr, 5 spd 2009 Forster, premium package, auto, NA The Hondas were always great cars in every way. We still have the two Accords. The Benzes were very reliable and durable, even as old cars. The 123, in particular, has idiot-proof handling and braking. I liked the Vanagon, the last of the old school rear-engined air-cooled VeeDubs. Reliable, spacious, simple. I will someday own another Corvair. Neat cars, and unique among American iron. The last Aerostar, the 1997 MY, is spacious, reasonably economical, and as reliable as a hammer. We still have it. The Forester will be interesting to own, since it is our first Subaru. |

1975 Scirocco (had the sloppiest gear linkage this side of a VW Microbus)
1978 Fiesta (Beater for when the 80 Scirocco was in the shop, which was often- but was it cheap to run! - Kleber 155/80/12's @ $28 EA, Headlights $7 ea.) 1980 Scirocco (3 engines, 5 transmissions, 4 different shock/spring combos, more different tires than I can count, Callaway turbo, big valve head, etc) 1987 Jetta GLI (return to sanity after the 80) 1992 Corrado VR6 (most reliable car I ever owned and a hoot to drive) 1994 Geo Prizm (Corolla Clone to non-US members-Wifes) 1998 Passat GL (Wifes) 2002 WRX (a blast, but too much of a quality/feature come down from the Corrado) 2003 Forester X -Premium (Wifes) 2005 Legacy GT 2006 Forester XT (Wifes) 2009 Forester X -Premium (Wifes) Fav was the Corrado, but the feel of the legacy is close to that of a larger Corrado |

Ford was selling brand new recently launched Pinto's for $1999 back then and it was just the ticket to replace my wrecked Austin Healy. A drunk Navy Chief had made a left turn right in front of me. If I remember correctly they gave me $1000 trade-in on the Healy, I couldn't believe it and couldn't sign the papers for the Pinto fast enough. It was my first band new car and it served me well, except I couldn't keep even heavy duty front shocks on it. |
