Default Deer Whistle

After almost hitting a deer (again...) today a friend told me about these deer whistles that you can mount on your car. Anyone out there using one with success?

When I was looking to buy a forester I test drove a '07 that had those mounted in the little gap under the front license place. The salesman was naming off all the features and he mentioned deer whistles and it was the first i've ever heard of those things so he pointed them out. They're pretty cool and almost unnoticeable when mounted in the right spot.

2 things with them. They have to have uninterrupted air flow in to them so you cant hide them. For them to really work they have to mounted were they stick out like on the leading edge of the car. Second if you get a set they will freak out horses in trailers on the high way.

I know some friends that dirve through some heavily populated deer areas, and they see them once a week or so dash out in front of them at various distances.

Since then he purchased a basic model and says he never sees them anymore. Co-incidence? Who knows.

Mount spikes on the front and pedal to the medal, more effective than those whistles singing dandy...

yes from my understanding the passive ones (use wind) don't work but the active ones like the one in the above link is supposed to.

Here's a short article on "deer whistles" from the Washington State University Extension.
EB1677 Animal Warning Devices

Similar statements can be found on many of the states' department of conservation websites, etc..

I had deer whistles attached to my Pathfinder, sold through the local auto club (BCAA). Installed as per instructions. I still saw lots of deer and "hit" one at 4 AM. More a nudge that really startled it.

I doubt they work but some are cheap enough why not try? Just don't rely on them to keep wildlife away.

I have had them on all my cars since moving to Calgary and doing a lot of mountain driving. The deer seem to stop in their tracks as I approach and do not dart into the road.

$8 from Canadian Tire. Worth it for me.

I hear that "red dots" put the fear of the devil into deer too.

We have a similar style of whistle down here called the "shoo roo", I had a pair fitted to my 1st ever Subaru, an RX Liberty. One day at a servo a guy asked me if they actually worked and I said "dunno, never seen a roo to ask him".
