In my previous cars I ran amsoil (their 'best' version), but lately I decided i would use Mobil 1 Extended Performance.. Amsoil was just getting too expensive for my usage. BUT I still want the synthetic advantages..
Looking on there there are a lot of good synthetic oils that would serve most ppls needs easily.. buy what you can find locally and at a good price..
For gear oil I am going to stick with Amsoil Severe Gear..
If you watch AutoZone and/OR Advance - you can get a Mobil 1 filter and 5 qts of oil on special for about $30 at times.. Mobil 1 filters are $10 to 14 separately.. 5 qtrs of oil is $25 at walmart..
The best oil is what the dealer uses (Pennzoil Platinum, I think) during my no-charge routine maintenance period. After that, I'll probably use Mobil 1 or Wal-Mart's SuperTech synthetic.
I've used Royal Purple in all of my vehicles, motorcycles, scooters & tractors for the last 20 years. I've never had an issue which was oil related. zero usage. After my one free dealer oil change, my Forester will be getting 5W30 RP.:wink2:
GF6 and dexos1:2015 will have LSPI tests, but they both seem to be a ways off as far as actually showing up as certs on mass market oils.
Personally, I stick with M1 5W30s (including EP and ESP).
i had oil consumption of about 3/4 to 1 qt / 3500 miles on M1 or Pennzoil. No loss of oil between changes using Subaru Oil or Castrol Edge Full Synthetic.
Somewhat incomplete to ask and suggest oil but not mention car's usage, oil change interval, oil filter, etc.
IMO, Castrol Edge is a cheap, readily available option that should be just fine for 7K OCI. 5w-30 is what your car would take, I've ran the 0w-20 version in the TSX (will use it in wife's new Mazda), and now run 5w-40 in the Golf. And, also ran the 0w-40 version of it in E39.
No M1 for me, don't see a good reason when I believe there are better alternatives for same price.
Just changed factory fill at 4900 miles. Had 1/2 quart consumption. Filled with Penzoil Ultra Platinum Plus 5W-30W. Also took a sample of the Factory fill and sent it to Blackstone for an oil analysis. Will continue to do so for each change. I drive in boost a lot and idle until the engine is warmed up.
my new subaru mechanics swear by rotella t6 5w40 oil and purolator pure one filter. They say that subarus love it..
Anyone have any experience with this oil??
Generally speaking, I think the "Subarus love T6" mentality goes back to the days of EJ-series engines, and doesn't necessarily apply to the new models...
I would get anything with dexos 1 gen 2 cert since its specifically formulated for small displacement turbos. Make sure its still gf5 for warranty reasons. If it doesn’t have the badge for the dexos 1 gen 2 then its old stock, pennzoil just emailed me about this. My autozone has pennzoil platinum sitting around from march, anything after 9/1/17 is gen 2. Walmart seems to be getting the newer stock in, they have a mix across brands of gen 1 and 2
Personally.. An A3 or even a ( C3 at reduced OCI, if that what floats ya boat) euro spec oil will be up to the job of protecting the motor a lot better and longer than any GF5 oil will.
I only have a little over 20,000 miles on my 2016 XT. Once the dealership stops doing free changes I'm going to use Motul 8100 EcoNergy 5W30. I remember doing some research at one point in time, and going with this one. I can get fairly cheap OEM filters so I'll stick with that. I mostly commute to work, but take the occasional road trip to a outdoor destination in the West/Northwest. Definitely get spirited with my driving. Huge fan of the tight twisting roads in Oregon by Willamette National Forest, and other fun roads in Northern CA. Not sure if this oil is the best for the FA20, but I feel better using it then others. I also enjoy admiring the machining on my Grimmspeed oil cap.
Really, I think any full syn oil should be fine if within the 6k oci change. The CVT keeps the FXT rev's pretty low, so its not too hard on the engine. However should probably look for something better if extending beyond the 6k oci.
I agree there seems to be no real conclusion but Blackstone hints that Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 has ever so slight edge in the EJ 2.5L Turbo generation of engines. Not sure why Subaru owners using Blackstone for oil testing used the Rotella T6 so much more often than other motor oil options?
I've been using Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 5w30 on my wife's XT since it's first oil change without any consumption. Out of curiousity, I did a Blackstone Oil Analysis report on the car now that it has 44k on the FA20DIT and the results came back good for a 5400mile OCI. I've been changing the oil between 6-7k, but decided to dump it a little early this time and request a full workup and TBN as well.
Here's Blackstone's notes:
Thanks for the notes. Fuel system additives typically burn up before reaching the oil, so they don't
have a significant impact on these results. The viscosity was a little low and there was some fuel present,
but neither is harmful at this level. Universal averages show typical wear for this type of engine after about
4,300 miles of oil use, and after going 5,407 miles on this oil, wear metals are in great shape. Most are
below average, so your engine is wearing very well at 44,102 miles. The TBN was good at 4.7 since 1.0 or
less is low, so try up to 7,500 miles next. Excellent!
Presume that it sheared to a 20 grade due to the comments. Blackstone's fuel readings are a little on the low side since it is only an estimate based on flashpoint as opposed to an actual fuel test. There's a uoa sticky if you want to add it there.
I hate when Blackstone makes statements about something not being harmful because they're looking at a few ppm's of wear metals. IMO, this gives owners a false sense of security since they may think that they will never have an oil related failure because BS's wear metals look good.
It depends on the level of mods Kas, for a standardish car just stick will a decent 10w40 oil. A 10w-40 synthetic oil is a step up in protection and will cope with some modifications and some track use.

For the last five years, I've used nothing but Royal Purple in all my vehicles, 2017 Forester 2.5 Touring, 1998 Ford Econoline, lawn mowers, tractors, etc. I've had zero oil usage. I'm sold on RP!
Do you have reason to think the 2014+ Subaru oil usage issues are due to using Subaru specs for motor oil or some other factor or combo of factors?
