Exclamation Takata airbag recall (Update: 2009-2011 Forester) - merged thread

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/01/au...tomobiles&_r=0

Japanese Sales Gain Despite Massive Japanese Airbag Recall

Japan's Takata, a supplier of airbags and sponsor of awesome JGTC cars, has been embroiled in a massive recall for airbag inflators that were charged improperly. If activated, they could send fragments of metal into the driver.

So far, three million cars have been recalled.

But now Takata has identified that the parts are also in an undisclosed number of Subarus and Mitsubishis. Get ready to see an additional recall to fix those cars. A recall that goes beyond the already recalled cars from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Ford, Chrysler and BMW.

No models announced yet from Subaru, but I would not be shocked if quite a few Foresters make the list.

UPDATE: 2009-2011 Foresters have just been added to the recall. - http://blog.caranddriver.com/takata-...nissan-subaru/

Likely will be on older models.

The following is about the other manufacturers announced, but likely pertains to the Subaru involvement as well.

Quote:
In a June 11 letter to the NHTSA, Takata said it would support "regional campaigns" to replace certain driver-side air bag inflators made between January 2004 and June 2007, as well as certain passenger-side inflators made between June 2000 and July 2004. But Takata did not admit there was any "safety defect" in the air bags.

Oh boy... Thanks for the heads up, Josh... Looks like I will be going to the dealership as soon as they call it, if they do!

This doesn't seem to have hit the Foresters in the end [perhaps it only hit the cars made outside of Japan, although I'm concerned it should, as I drive a 2001].

Also what's up with the different years for passenger and driver? Were they using different procedures or equipment on the various inflaters?

I did see something in the paper this morning about airbag recalls, but I was only skimming it. I did not see if our beloved subies were were affected. If my SG9 is affected, it should be a free dealer fix, right?

I would love for my airbag to get recalled and then maybe they could throw in a WRX airbag for me since I now have the WRX wheel =)

Guys, this is old news. The thread got bumped, so I am going to change the title to reflect this.

Turns out no Foresters were included in the recall:

Quote:
Subaru will replace the airbag inflators installed on certain model year 2003-2005 Subaru Legacy, Outback and Baja Vehicles, MY 2004-2005 Subaru Impreza (including WRX/STI) vehicles and MY 2005 Saab 9-2X vehicles. Only vehicles registered in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be affected by the recall.

I wonder why this only affects Florida and not the other contiguous states (I'm guessing maybe the others get Subarus shipped from Japan and not the American plant)?

Florida because the problem was tied to explosives that got too moist (they think) so they only did it in states with ulta-high humidity

paranoia strikes deep...airbags list valid?

there has been so much misinformation on the Takata airbag recall.

The last site I found that was working said the 2003-2004 Baja had the "exploding airbags"...maybe true, I don't really know.
I suppose the best thing to do is give it some time for a list from Subaru.
