Would be cool to have it in the new ones, no 2017 Subaru is on the lineup for it, according to Apple's CarPlay site. Interesting that Subaru's posting that the new Imp will get it. Apple needs to update if so!

It would be too easy for them to do a software update to our head-units.. how else could they try to get us to upgrade to the new model? <banging head on wall>

If they could do it via a software update, they could always charge for it like some other manufacturers have.

eh, you don't know that the 7" HUs can be updated for ACP/AA. The hardware specs of the 7" units might not be up to it, or not possible.

If Subaru releases a newer HU for 2017 or 2018 Foresters that supports ACP/AA, then swapping out would be the easiest route.

I don't think swapping a Impreza 8" HU into the Forester would work without lots of effort. The trim pieces (with the integrated buttons) would need to be replaced, and the Impreza dash trim is different, not plug+play, etc. Also, items like the steering wheel controls on the Impreza vs. Forester might not be the same resistance...

If you look at the new '17 Impreza HU, it's rather square-y, with the vents moved to the sides. '16 Forester's HU is wide, with vents on top of the HU.
Only way to put the '17 Impreza HU into the '16 Forester would by somehow moving the air vents from the top to the sides of the HU.
Chances are that '18 Forester will have the new HU, and it might be more compatible with '16 Forester. I've been thinking about it and the side vents make sense on Impreza, with it's lower sitting position. Forester, with it's tall sitting position would benefit from vents being high up

Can the apple carplay be excluded, removed, or replaced?

The best thing to do if you really want CarPlay is to call Subaru and make a suggestion for it. The more they get the more pressure it puts on them.

Not a good sign

Welp, it's not a good sign that the 2017 Forester's just announced apparently don't have CarPlay (or Android Auto). I guess it could still come out, but the new Foresters appear to have the same 7.0" screens and systems as the 2016s (like mine).

Well, maybe they're working on an update for both 😒

The 2017 Impreza has car play, so Subaru is clearly starting to adopt the technology.

The new Imprezas have an entirely new radio system vs the most recent radio introduced in '15 with the redesigned legacy/outback

It's my understanding that this radio does not support those systems but is instead being used as an upgrade to hold people over until the existing models get their redesign/new radios.

Impreza already has it, the crosstrek will be the next on the list (next year), followed by forester/new 7 seater, outback and legacy

That certainly seems to the case, as the Impreza system looks different. Still don't understand why they wouldn't update current Foresters for CalPlay. If it's not going to be a few years, then why not do the software upgrade for the current systems?

And here I was, all silently gleeful, that Apple had not invaded my Subaru. Apple is like the Borg. YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Not today.
