If you guys actually looked at the video I posted of the x-MODE, you'd realize it's great for sand just like it's great for snow and ice. The tires are going to make half the difference though in the equation just like always.
Has anyone figured out if the downhill assist is
(1) available on both engines

(2) triggered by a switch we haven't seen? I know it's part of the x-mode, but I've been unclear on how it works.

If it is indeed dawgmobile's #8 question than maybe this will help.

This is a member on the XV forum with a CVT model. Listen to the first part where he mentions the vehicles owned previously SecC First Off Road - YouTube! and here
The sound you hear in the second video has been determined to be the ABS pump working in relation to the stability control. Members of the XV forum have only found the noises while driving through soft sand with some tire spin.

Don't know why one is linked and the other embeded??

It's in the same x-MODE button. I doubt the USDM models will receive a different kind of x-MODE so if your vehicle has x-MODE, you have hill descent control. There's a JDM spec' sheet on the Japanese Subaru website. Just use Google translator. Subaru is going mainstream so it's not like they'd try to create another button for it when you can just have one. It goes with the same logic of using three big knobs for climate control.

Great! But how is it triggered. If I'm crawling down noble knob at a brisk 3 mph, how to I lock it in?

I'll guess the button cycles through a number of modes?

The air from the front of the vehicle should work great as long as the flow path is smooth enough. The ducting is plastic, so heat will be minimal concern. Extractor would cause warm engine bay air to heat the intake charge, or at least not cool it as well. And it's that "forcing" which creates a differential pressure and therefore increased flow across the heat exchanger (TMIC). The front of the car is also a high pressure region (a brick on wheels has to force a lot of air out from in front of it) so by moving the "scoop" to that area of the car the TMIC may be more efficient while improving overall aerodynamics.
Plus it helps that there isn't a blazing hot turbo next to the TMIC anymore.

Wow just realized I had a lot to say about that.

So they did away with hood scoop to be more mainstream but still have a more funny-looking car with the XT (than the X) and this is supposed to appeal more to those wanting a more mainstream look? It makes no sense to me. I say a lot of people will see them sitting side-by-side and like the way the X looks but want the power in the XT and not understand why they can't get the turbo in the one that "looks better". My 2c.
Not to argue but most of the "mainstream" buyers around the world are not worried about the HP. Around my city I see 15 NAs for every 1 XT.

I'm sure it will respond to a button press or brake pedal tap. Patience, I'm sure it will be the owners manual. Not like anybody around here will be pushing that button for the next 3 months anyways.

Now that I have read through the last 30 pages (took me a couple days) I must say that I am impressed by the new design compared to the SH. Especially the DGM XT with the front lip and roof rack. I may have found my next Fozzy While the WRB photoshop is Sex on wheels, I wont get my hopes up too much.

Maybe I need to see one in person but I think the front looks too plastic moldy cheap looking..

I own a 2010 but I really like the design. When the newer sh models came out was the response generally negative as well?

I'm not a fan of the trend, which Subaru fell in with for 2014, of the headlights and taillights sticking out like bumps or zits. I much prefer the streamline look for exterior lighting lenses, not the tumor growth look that is all the rage now.

Pretty much! Sometimes it can be hard to embrace change to something that is already well liked.

I will wait till I see one in person at the dealer; also I think that the front that is generating all the discussion is specific to the turbo version.
