Default Forester XT 2005 or 2007?

In Denmark we have only very few Subaru's driving around.

I am convinced it is a fantastic car and would like to buy a new 2007 model or an used 2005 model (30.000 miles). I have tried both and think the 05-model is more comfortable and drive more like an ordinary car - very easy and nice to drive.

The 07 model is more stiff and has more the feeling as a SUV/truck. The 05 model also got navigation, leather seats and sunroof which the 07 model does not. And actually I think the 05 model is better looking.

For these reasons (driving feeling is the most important) I will probably go for the 05 model.

I do know of all the new features of the 07 model and it does not convince me of buying this one.

But is the 05 as good quality as the new model or is there any other reason not buying the 05 model? There is a relatively big difference in cost. We pay a lot more for cars in Denmark than you do in USA or any other country in the world.

Those people who have tried both models: - which did you like best?

Thank you in advance for the help.

Hey Antaeus, welcome to the forums!

I had the same dilemma and went with an '05 with almost 30k back in November 2006. I saved a bundle of money (about $8,000) and got what I thought was a better car. So just so you know, others have dealt with the same question!

Let us know what you decide. Tell us about the '05...color? options? transmission?

So you got it for half a year - satisfied? It is the 2.5 XT turbo?

I will probably go for a black, used 05 model, but if none available I will go for a blue (or a new model).

There are very few used 05 models for sale in Denmark - I do only know of 3. Subaru have not been in the country for many years, but came back in 2005.

Hi and welcome to the forums !
I got an 06 mainly because I prefer the look of the facelifted model but that's down to personal preference..

It was discussed on here fairly recently - you may want to look at this thread for the various opinions :)

Ive driven both, and I enjoyed the 05 better. I think it also feels a bit more sporty, and car like. The looks are better imo, and it will be cheaper, and cheaper on insurance.

If I were to keep the vehicle a long long time, I'd get the 07 with zero miles. If I'm going to trade in a few years then the 05. JMO Ed

Yes, 6 months, I've put 3k on it, I love it, love it, love it. It's the 2.5 turbo. With a few cheap upgrades I've enjoyed it even more, but as is it's a great car. I tell you what, the turbo never loses it's rush of excitement.

I haven't seen any reports that would suggest the later cars are better quality. I have an 04 which has only done 19000 miles but it still feels rock solid. I prefer the styling of the 03-05 models - the nose looks more aggressive and less SUV-like than the new ones. But that's just a personal preference. If you can get a relatively low mileage 05 then go for it.

Whichever year you get it's a great all-round vehicle. The only thing to really say against it that it is quite thirsty.

All the 2005 models are with navigation, leather seats and sunroof. The 2007 model is without.

1)The blue is the one I have in mind: 31,000 miles - January 1th 2005 - Price $36,497 (cars are very expensive in Denmark). The condition could have been a little bit better though it is still okay.

2) The grey is newer and in good condition and have only done 9300 miles - September 1th 2005 - Price: $41,992. I do not like the color grey and it cost more - I would probably have picked that if it was blue or black. It will cost at least $2000-3000 painting it black.

3) A black is also soon available, but there is one (big) problem. It is on reparation. It has turned around in an accident and the roof has to be repared. One advantage is that it will get a new paint. Inside the condition is better than the blue one. But can the roof ever be fixed again? - I'm not sure. There may be problems with that car the rest of its days. From summer 2005 - 37,400 miles - $36,497
No photo's

A NEW 2005 model (only one available in the country) - $52,000 - I consider this too, but I can get no $ off in price.

A new 2007 model - $49,843 - can probably get $2000-2500 off

I'm curious about those cargo barriers. I've never seen anything like that before. Are they a standard Subaru accessory in Denmark? Given that all of the cars pictured seem to have them then I assume they may be.

Presumably the right-hand piece can be added and the whole thing moved rearwards when the back seats are being used?

We have this very special (and crazy) system in Denmark: Cars are registered with "yellow plates" or with "white plates".

Yellow plates: Was made for workers with cargo - People were only aloud to make use of the front seat. Back was for cargo (meaning no back seats) - later (and today) private people could also buy cars on yellow plates - again they could only use the front seats for people.

White Plates: just a normal car with back seats.

Yellow plate cars typically cost half the price of white plate cars in Denmark (only difference the back seat).
So it will be much cheaper for me buying a Forester on yellow plates - and I do not really need the back seats - I have no kids.

2005 Forester (with navigation, leather, sunroof), yellow plates: $52,000
2005 Forster, white plates: $98,500

2007 Forester (without navigation, leater, sunroof), yellow plates: $49,850
2007 Forester, white plates: $80,900

Thanks for taking the time to explain it. Your legislature must have too much time on their hands! (Actually we have something somewhat similar in the UK but only for pickup trucks and vans, and the difference is much less).

It seems rather out of tune with the times to financially encourage people to have a car than can only carry two people. A car carrying four is emitting half the pollution of one carrying two, in some sense.

Is that US dollars? I thought we were overcharged for cars in the UK but that is eye-watering.

Yes it is out of the time spirit.
Yes that is US dollars.

We probably have the highest taxes for cars in the world.
Most of the cars one can get in Sweden for 1/3 the price - but no need to buy them in Sweden - one still have to pay the high tax taking them to Denmark.

Below are some examples of the cost of a new car in Denmark:

VW Golf 1,6: $47,000
CitroŽn C4 Picasso 1.8: $51,000 - Yellow plates: $26,500

Some of the big 4x4 on yellow plates do not have much extra tax right now - but this will be changed in a very short time - so a lot of people are buying the big 4x4 these days: Hummer, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg...
