Dealership experiences negotiating extended warranty

I just got back from Autobarn Subaru of Countryside, IL where I purchased a 2011 2.5x premium all weather. I know the pros and cons of extended warranties, but wanted to see if they could make a really great deal. 7/70 started out at $2200 then came down to $1600. When it became clear that wasn't going to sell me the warranty I was offered 5/50 for $935. Needless to say I passed. I feel like I made the right decision.

The F&I guy made it sound like the quality of coverage I would receive if I decided to buy a warranty later would be less and the length of coverage would be shorter. Anyone with experiences in buying these after the initial purchase?

thanks

The advice most people will tell you is you do not have to buy the extended warranty when you purchase the car. If the dealer says you have to, he's lying. Even give Subaru Customer service a call (# on their website) and they'll tell you also that you do not have to purchase at the time you buy your vehicle.

Besides dealers offering third party warranties that will have you jumping through hoops to qualify when you need it, you can often pick up the genuine Subaru extended warranties through dealers on ebay. Of course as your mileage increases closer to the original factory warranty's end so will the premium for an extended warranty plan.

To my knowledge if it is a "Subaru" warranty, the coverage is the same regardless if you buy it the day of your new Forester or if you wait a week or a month. Hit up some of the Sponsors here or search on Ebay. One of our sponsors sells warranties on there at a very good price non-negotiable.

^^^ Good advice about our Supporting Vendors. Give Jackie at Annapolis Subaru a call (1-866-509-3019) and ask her their prices. Let her know you're a new member here, she may be able to provide her pricing for comparison and don't be afraid to ask questions. She is also a good provider of Genuine Subaru parts and accessories at much lower prices than walking into a dealership's parts department.

Cheers
Doug

a week, a month, a year, 3 years, you can buy the extended warranty from Subaru until the day your car hits 3 years, or 36000 miles, In fact, i just got an offer from subaru for an extra 6 years, or up to 100k miles, for $800, and i'm coming up on 3 years on the car and 33000 miles (of course that car was totaled last month)

Also Geico offers me Breakdown Insurance, which covers everything that the Extended Warranty does for pretty close to the same $800, only i don't have to finance it into the loan (also the offer i got from Subaru offered it in 10 $80/month payments)

So there are options other than buying it from the dealer.

I bought the extended warranty with the car but as far as negotiating the price goes it helps to have a partner. My fiance and I were sitting with the dealer signing the papers and he asked about the extended warranty and then told us the price (can't remember what it was) but my fiance laughed and told him that her Jeep's extended warranty was only $800 so he offered it to us for that price and we got it. Funny thing is she never got an extended warranty on her Jeep but it worked. I've also used this warranty twice now so I feel I got my money's worth.

That's a great technique, like a good cop/bad cop thing. Congratulations on your success. The guy I was dealing with wasn't budging on his price of $1600. I did follow up and found the warranty for $835, but I think I'm just going to wait and see what Subaru offers before the factory warranty is up.

Keep in mind that the price will likely increase as mileage does. Just as often like a life insurance policy, it costs less for a younger individual than an older that may have more health issues as they get older increasing the risk of a payout.

Continue shopping, even periodically check ebay for Subaru extended warranties.
