How about something like this? Their low profile and easy to strap down. Just noticed their similar to the rotopacks above

And in the light of the most recent recall, equipped with a 1.6l eco boost engine that has had 3 recalls for starting on fire!

I vote for a roof basket.

Why don't you store the 2 five gallon cans at work.... and two more at home, if you think you will run out of gas, and don't feel like going 60 miles to the gas station, then use you stored gas and extend your "range" I just don't see how safe will it be to carry extra gas with you, carrying up and down the freeway... no, not a good idea. good luck thou.

My friend's dad's lifted Jeep has two 5-gallon jerry cans mounted next to the spare tire, with a fire extinguisher the size of a SCUBA tank mounted in between them. It is a true off-road prepped machine so it needs these things I guess. LPG-converted vehicles have special tanks that fit in the back hatch and such, and they are as safe and even more safe than. The problem with jerry cans on the back is that they can turn into firebombs even in a simple rear-end collision. Likewise in a rollover accident with jerry cans on a roof rack.

Also, if you're going to be traveling so far from civilization as you need auxiliary fuel containers, don't even think about removing the spare tire. In fact, for being 150+ miles away from even a gas station (~300+ miles out of a tank of gas on average?), I would even consider getting a beefier full-sized spare, if your Forester has the donut spare instead, just for posterity's sake.

These are quite compact:

Kolpin fuel pack jr. 1.5 gallons / 5.6 liters

Probably too small:

MSR 30 oz bottle / 1 liter

Trying to think what you could safely stash inside the vehicle...

Depends how much fuel you think you need i guess.

Heavy Duty Swiss Water Bag

We use these with a modified spout and a heavy duty ball valve in our plane for back country flying. The rubber has not broken down in the 4 years we have used them. They are pretty strong and roll up nicely when not in use.
