I second the clay bar recommendation.
I use Duragloss Total Performance Polish (#105) www.duragloss.com Best when used with the Buffing and Polishing cleaner (#652) to clean the paint and Polish Bonding Agent (#601) to help it set. Maintain it monthly with some Duragloss Aquawax spray detailer (#951) and one coat of polish has lasted the better part of a year with the car outside. Lots of good detailing info at www.autopia.org/forum/

On my '03 & my son's '95 Neon Sport we use Zip Wax car wash. I've used more expensive car wash, but this one doesn't spot as much & that saves me time.
For wax, I use Classic Turtle wax, Carnauba Turtle wax & last year I tried Mother's Carnauba wax (expensive!). The classic Turtle wax is a cleaner wax, more so than the carnauba waxes. I kinda like the smell of the Mothers's carnauba wax... reminds me of a fragrance a girl friend used!:)... If you're going to be at it most of the day, you might as well use a wax that works well & smells good! For plastic, tires & the like, I use Mother's Back-to-Black. This is good stuff! I've tried ArmorAll & even Griot's Vinyl & Rubber Dressing. Mother's last longer, not as oily with a low gloss shine. Bobby...

At least y'all can wash your cars and wax them. Here in my part of the country, we're still in a bad drought and car washing at home is verboten. Even though my rain gauge shows 1.8 inches of rain today...
Long range forecasts show a drier than normal spring ahead, so I don't expect the water restrictions to ease soon. Pollen season will be here in a couple of weeks. I'll have to rely on the few remaining open commercial car washes to remove the heavy coat of green that will bury the car. But the days of when I can spend some good "quality" hours of washing and waxing here at home are gone for the time being. Ray Lovinggood Carrboro, North Carolina, USA PS: Can't wait till I can flush the toilet after every visit and take 15 minute showers again! :-) |

Never got into hard-core detailing but I would like to at some point. For now I use Zymol cleaner wax (the blue stuff). You can get it at most auto parts stores. Goes on and wipes off quickly and works well with a buffer. It's usually good for 3 or 4 months.
I've had used cars and older cars, so I'm not that anal on the stuff I use. With the new Forester I might be a little more spendy on wax and polish. |

Well, I like to have a mixed bag of tricks.
When I am waxing I like to have a light, medium, and, heavy (as I call them) waxes. The heavy would be similar to an old school carnauba, medium something like a Meguiars #26 or similar, and light one of those new high tech things like zymol or the likes. I will do the heavy wax every season or so - the medium every few months - and the light about once a month. When others are getting waxed it has to be Brazilian!
