Default Driveway Sealant

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion on how to remove driveway sealant (the blacktop stuff) from along the side plastic moulding on the bottom of my 08? Apparently, some knucklehead lost a big barrel of the stuff out of the back of a trailer or truck. It spilled all over the road and I had no choice but to drive through it.

I was able to swerve a little to limit the splatter to one side of the car. It's black and sicky. It's on the plastic and the wheels.

Will the usual Bug and Tar removal products work on plastic without discolouration? I'm going to attempt to use my powerwasher very carefully too.

Any other creative solutions before I start?

Thanks.

I use an artist's solvent called "Bestine"...........it removed any adhesive, old wax and the like but is very ready to use....just wipe it over the tar and off it comes........

Kerosene is quick and safe to use in the removal of bitumen (tar) and that is what road makers use to clean their tools with also.

Since driveway sealer is an oil based product, you can use kerosene, mineral spirits, gasoline or even vegetable oil. Think along the same way as removing oil based paint.

The veggie oil does work, it just taked a little more elbow grease and is better for the paint.

I use Ronsonol to remove tar. It will remove the wax as well, so the paint will need to be rewaxed,

Driveway sealer is water-based.

Most consumer-grade driveway sealers are water-based emulsions containing water, clay fillers, latex, polymers, additives and either coal tar (a byproduct of baking coal to make coke) or asphalt (a byproduct of petroleum refining). Some so-called “asphalt” emulsions also contain some coal tar."
