2014 Forester and gas mileage

This is my second forester. I traded my 2000 in for the 2014 premium. The car has 6800 miles on it now with several longer highway trips on it and am currently on a cross country trip. I'm very disappointed that on the highway it is only getting 21 or 22 average mpg. Going back and forth to work it does better with 25-27 mpg. I bought this car because it boasted 32 mpg on the sticker. I realize that ethanol drops mpg and that it is winter but even with having run a higher octane in it the change is negligible. Is anyone else having this kind of mileage?

I had horrible milage problems at around 24 on the highway until the car hit 3k miles then it spiked up to around 32mpg. I think the numbers might be backwards as it doesn't make sense that city would be higher than highway. Any modifications as far as roof rack, packasport, rims or is it bone stock?

Welcome to the forums too!!

Note the OP drives a 2.5i premium, not an XT.

My mileage has been right around EPA estimates on summer fuel/warm weather, around 25-26 highway on winter fuel/cold weather. See my Fuelly (in sig) to see the trend.

Andra, I would give your Forester a little more time to break in before you get too worried. If after 1-2,000 miles the economy is still poor, you definitely have a problem.

With warmer weather, I was able to get as high as 34 on a highway trip if I kept it around 65. Once I get over 70, the mpq drops quick. With winter fuel, and lots of wind, I did a 500 mile round trip across Iowa and back, doing around 73 plus around 50 miles around town and averaged 27.6 for the trip, and that was with using the remote start several times for around 5 minutes each time.

I do have 11k miles on mine, but have not noticed any difference from when it was brand new.

If you are not slamming on the gas and/or going 80+, your mileage seems way off. Also, does your mpg include warm up time?

Got 6500 on mine so far here in Colorado.
During the week going back and forth to Boulder for work I'm getting 30mpg.
In the mountains I get 25mpg going there and 33mpg coming back.
Drove from Denver to Des Moines over Christmas and on the way there I got 26mpg while driving 80+mph but on the way back to Denver I had a 40+mph head wind from Des Moines to the Colorado state line where I averaged 19mpg at 80+mph.
Overall I'm very satisfied with the fuel economy of my Forester.

2014 Highway Gas Mileage

Thank you so much for the replies. I have played with rpm and speed sufficiently that I can say the mileage will go up to the 30s as long as I don't try to get up to highway speed quickly. If I keep the speed under 50mph for a few miles, the rpm under 2k and slowly accelerate to about 63mph I can hold the mpg at about 28 or 29. Even the cruise doesn't maintain the long distance mileage. It is the downshift that the car doesn't seem to recuperate from. Once it has downshifted to go up an incline or if I have to accelerate beyond the 2000rpm the mileage begins to drop and there is no recovery until I stop completely and start again from scratch. It's ridiculous. I've now got 8k on the car having driven from NY to AZ in the last few days. At one point it was only getting 16mpg on the whole tank! I have photos of the screen at various times since that will be my only proof that something is not right.

I have an XT, with around 1200 miles. I can't say for the 2.5 how well they hold to Econ estimates, but I've noticed in mine that if I keep it at about 70mph(in Texas speed limit is 75) I can average 27-30 on the highway. At 75-80 it drops to around 24. As previously stated, the fuel makes a HUGE difference, and fuel with 10% ethanol will make about a 10-15% difference in fuel consumption. Also remember, if you average your total tank rather than setting the computer to only test mileage while on the highway... It only takes a couple miles of stop and go/sitting idle to wreck havoc on your mileage estimates.
Are you recommended to use premium in the 2.5? If so, then with regular again that will lower mileage.
Just a few caveats to hopefully help.

The coldness kills my gas mileage, more so this year than ive seen in past. When i got my car in september i could get about 27-28mpg pure highway driving carefully and easy. Now with temps under 20 degrees, its hard for me to pull off 20mpg doing the same trips. My 2012 foz xt didnt change much at all, 24 in summer 21 in winter no matter how i drove. The new ones seem to give u a broader range of mpg. I know on perfect conditions the new xt could get over 30, but contrast you can easily manage teens.

- always hand calculate your mpg, readout is about 2mpg optomistic
- i have plenty of mpg experiences with many cars, the 2014 so far is the only one ive owned that seems to be very tough to acheive the mpg ratings. I'm wondering if people in certain areas of the country are acheiving similar mpg, hmm.
