We filled up the gas tank and re-set the trip meter - gas mileage with city driving is now 19-21 with a/c on - hot in Miami. New question. We were offered a trade up to a touring class for a small amount of extra money - is it worth it for duel a/c and the better gauges - just asking as you all are very experienced with Foresters and I am totally not. Thank you for all of the responses

Seems to me like you don't give much thought about how you waste your money.

How much more will you have to be paying in taxes, licensing, etc? I would say just stick with what you have. The touring offers several upgrades, but nothing drastically better than the premium. There are upgrades, but most people can easily live without them.

Agreed - we are keeping the Subaru and driving cross country in it - I am just really nervous about the whole trip and not having a small car but will probably be able to get a small car in about one year again.

You guys have given great advice and I appreciate it.

Default Similar to Vitamin D

That doesn't mean I don't think what you are getting is low. It is, for how you describe your driving, personally I think you should be about 3-7mpg higher then the 22 you reported.

I would continue to document it. If you do not see it gradually improving I would get in touch with SOA(Subaru of America) via their customer service number(1-800-SUBARU-3) or your local dealer to express the concerns.

We really don't have a solid trend yet to compare the FB25 engine in the 2011+ non-turbo to.
i too have a base 2012 forester and get similar dismal mileage readings after 1700 miles. Waiting for the first oil change at the dealer to ask aout this.

Regarding getting a small car again, the Forester by design is big on the inside and small on the outside so it already is a small vehicle. Only about 4" longer and 1" wider than your Prius.

Each vehicle has its strengths and actually complement each other quite well if you could keep both. Forester mileage will never come close to that of the Prius and the Prius will never come close to the utility of the Forester.

Default 2012 Forester Horrible gas mileage

I have a 2.5X Forester purchased May 2012 and the gas mileage is horrible. I came from a van getting 10mpg previously so I was overjoyed at first but the Foresters 14mpg is just bad. I have 5000 miles on it after 7 months and other than an occassional trip I do about 750-800 miles per month all local predominately non highway driving. Ive heard that there is a break in period but I should be beyond that and I am a very conservative driver. I was told these cars are great, and other than this I like it very much. On the two trips taken with it mpg came in at 26. Any ideas, anyone?

Current results at 64K miles on my 2009 XT. Just finished another 1000 mile trip this last week and averaged 24.4 over the entire trip with one tank hitting 25.1. That was with the cruise set at 77-78, no a/c, sunroof open for most of the trip. I-85, through Atlanta, then I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 to Nashville and finally I-40 towards Memphis and two lane roads for the last 45 mile leg. return trip was the same roads.
I'm still happy after all these miles of smiles.

Those are some pretty impressive numbers. I'm not sure I could replicate that in my NA 2011. And with the sun roof open too. No wonder you were smiling:)

I just bought an 05 FXT 5MT.
And ill be honest, I was a little afraid after
Seeing all the MPG horror stories on here.

I just drove from Buffalo NY to Harrisburg PA.
It was almost all highway, and not going over 70 mph
Even in the 65 mph areas.
I also accelerate easily, and shift around 2-2.5k

The trip beginning to end was 302 miles.
When i got to my hotel, I fueled up across the street.
Fueled up 11.5 gallons.

Simple math 302/11.5= 26.26
If I was straight highway, I would be closer to 27 or more.

My car is totally stock. I'm glad I'M getting good mileage,
But I can see the frustration of the people who aren't getting
Good mileage when they should be getting better.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the mileage.
Knowing that car car still is heavy, has balls, and AWD.

I've got 2,200 miles on my 2013 FXT and according to the dash I've averaged 22.3 mpg since I bought it. Its been mostly city driving. My first tank got only 19mpg, but since then I've consistently gotten at least 21.5. On the highway going 65-70 I average 25mpg, but if I bump it up to 75-80 I get around 22. I get 21-22 when city driving. I don't baby the throttle, so I could probably do better if I tried. I just put a set of Michelin primacy mxv4's on it, so I'm expecting my mileage to go up a bit. I'm pretty happy with these numbers considering my previous vehicle was a 2wd 150hp v6 Ford Ranger that only got 17mpg.

Assuming your car is in good mechanical shape it just takes some smart driving (like you did on this trip) to return good mileage for a car not known for hi MPG. My lifetime average on my '11 5speed N/A Forester is 29.22 (14,549 miles driven using 497.77 gallons). I do what you do .... drive right at the limit or maybe 5 miles above, shift at 2-2.5K and also basically just try to minimize the use of my brakes when in urban and suburban situations. If one is not willing to drive it like that then one will have to settle for the 20-22mpg (or even lower) I see on this thread. I'll take 29.22 for an AWD small SUV all day long.
