Default Diesel economy poll?

There are a number of us on board with the boxer diesel now. How are we all doing for fuel?

I'm at 17k miles and the worst I've seen (dead of winter, short journeys etc) is 36mpg (imp)
Most tanks seem to come out between 40 and 43mpg (imp), but I'm pleased to report that break-in, warm weather, and more gentle motoring have now given me 47.1mpg (imp).

Pretty impressive! I'm sure that we can break the Euro extra-urban figure (48.7 with 16" wheels, 47.9 on 17"s)on a long run.

At 6000kms it's achieving: 32 miles for every US gallon, or 38 miles for every Imp gallon.

It's great compared to my WRX and not bad considering it still has not performed any long range trips.

I don't think that is impossible!

My D XC at 2000k and 1 month old has shown 45.5, 46, and 48 miles to the [imperial/UK] gallons on the dash at the last three fill-ups. I've gone over 500 miles per the last three tanks. I'm not much good at math so does that seem right?!

Most days the mpg on the dash is showing anything between 46 and 48 mpg. Hot days are much better. It has displayed 52.6 but this was for the first 50 miles after filling up and then it drops back to the late 40s! This is driving mostly 2 lane cross-country and I'm no speed slouch although I will get it into 5th and 6th at any opportunity.

I hit and killed a deer with it a few weeks ago and have quite a bit of damage to the bumper, grill and wing, which is pushed out slightly, and think this could effect the aerodynamics just a tiny bit until fixed. After that I'll go for over +48 per tank for sure.

In conclusion?: Wow! I am still mourning my old 98 Forester but this is more than a third more miles per tank/pound and with the lower emissions and road tax in the UK its win win. I just have to improve my neck muscles so my head doesn't snap back so much when pulling away . I will occasionally have a listen to the Subaru sound which emerges over 3500rpm when pulling hard just to remind myself I'm still a member of the Sube family! Very few of these on the road in the UK at the moment. In two months I've seen 3.

Welcome heffer!
you'll need to calculate mpgs, the dash readout is 1-2 mpg optimistic.

Using lights during the day, aircon, and radio reduces my mpg a bit.
Hope to hit the open highway soon enough, ie more than 500 mile trip.

Yeah, a/c makes quite a big hit. My scangauge reports load at at idle rising from 7% to 14%.

And how are we all doing on tank range? I haven't broken 600 miles yet but again, it's do-able. On mine at least, there's around 8l once the light comes on; the promised 1000km/tank isn't unbelievable on a run...

Welcome to the Diesel Club heffer. However, killing Bambi's is not really considered good form, especially when you use the 'love of your life' as the weapon . But worry not, redemption is at hand.

The meat should be well aged by now, so your invites to the Bambi Burger BBQ should be just about in the post

Whoops, back on topic; 402mls in 7hrs (inc. 30min lunch) @ 44.6mpg. AirCon off for most of the journey and 7 lots of 50mph road works (A30-M5-M42-M1). Not too bad, but the trip meter thinks it was 47.1mpg

My overall mpg (corrected) is around 32mpg, but that includes towing a heavy (brick like) caravan for over 2500 of my 6100mls.

At the end of the day, none of these values are bad, since it is AWD and it is not that light.................

I thank you all for welcoming me, anyway!

Hi there,

First posting here as a new Forester owner. Had my diesel Forester for 6 weeks now

So far the figures I've been getting are:

12 Sept 09 - 37.2 mpg (imp) (Odo:535mi)
20 Sept 09 - 38.5 mpg (imp) (Odo:889mi)
01 Oct 09 - 39.0 mpg (imp) (Odo:1103mi)
09 Oct 09 - 38.3 mpg (imp) (Odo:1368mi) (dash av.mpg 41.2 mpg)
16 Oct 09 - 40.0 mpg (imp) (Odo:1749mi) (dash av.mpg 42.6 mpg)

These have been calculated using milage and quantity of fuel. The dashboard display seems to be rather optimistic - about 3mpg better than the real figures :-(.

The figures are improving as the engine / transmission wear in, but they do seem a bit low. Sadly I'm a fairly sedate driver and I've already noticed the differece between doing 70mph and 80mph on the motorway. Do you think they'll continue to improve ?

Welcome jwhitehorn to the Forum, yet another Diesel owner

My latest towing figures are now up to 31mpg, courtesy of the tuning module I'm testing (1800rpm/51mph in 5th).

UK prices are between £1.00 & £1.10, with a typical difference of 1p or 2p. Sometimes diesel is more expensive, sometimes less
