I just took my first road trip to help break in the Forester this weekend. Driving from South Jersey to Hickory Run, PA I put on a little over 200 miles round trip. According to the trip computer I averaged 28.6 MPG one way. When I filled it up I computed 29.2 MPG. This was for about a 85 mile highway trip and 25 miles of twisty, up and down mountain road. Maybe I could have gotten better MPG's if I wasn't being a freak about changing speeds every 15 minutes on the highway.
Can't wait until the break in is over and I can set the cruise and forget it. I have the first family car trip to The Outer Banks scheduled this summer so I'll compare the numbers.

Wow, that is awesome mileage for highway and 22 for commuting is not really bad either if that is considerable amount of "around town" driving. My next car would definitely be an '09 Forester. Hopefully a diesel Forester makes it to the US very soon (yeah I know, unlikely). I cannot imagine a better car for that motor in the US Market. I think I've read they're getting high 40's and low 50 mpg's in Europe with the Diesel Boxer.

Congrats!
We have had a few reports in the last few weeks about the mileage on the 2009 NA, and all seem to agree that it is relatively easy to get within the 20/26 announced, some posted as high as 31 highway and averages between 24 and 27 were reported. However, I would like to read some 2009 XT mpg, as this engine seems to be the most reworked for 2009. I know sales were stopped recently, but some of you might have gotten yours before that... Thanks |

I just filled-up for the first time and averaged 21.4 mpg (the computer reported 21.3). My driving is entirely up and down hills with stop signs every block. I also deal with speed limits as low as 15 mph. I was real pleased to get 21.4 mpg as my last car averaged 12 here (it averaged 19 before I moved to western Washington).

I have about 1200 miles on my LL Bean. My avg has been just a shade over 22. That's about 80% city and 20% country/highway. Haven't taken a long trip on the highway yet so I'm waiting to see what that mileage will be.

I have 1,100 miles on my 09 Premium and have averaged 24 MPG per display and confirmed with my own calculation. This with a combination of suburban, rural and highway driving. The display has registered as high as 28.8 on rural roads with few stop signs (must have had a tailwind!)

Just got an '09 2.5X last Thursday, and over the first 400 or so miles of my driving (had 300 on it when I took possession), I'm averaging 24.9 on the mpg meter. Right after the last fillup, I had a bit of a freeway jog and the little darlin' got me 28.2 mpg, but it's lower on that tank now due to some city/downtown commuting.
I just sold a Mazda Protege5, and it looks like the MPG of the Forester is going to be almost identical to that car--the Protege had an auto trans, the Forester has a stick. The Protege would get me 24-25 on average, with 28 or so on the freeway. And I now have 68 cubic feet of cargo capacity and 4WD instead of 40 cubic feet and FWD.... I'm definitely happy, although it sure would be nice if gas prices settled down a bit.... George |
