Default 2009 1,000 mile MPG report

Reporting mpg achieved at 985 total miles...

Highest pegged on the dash meter - 31.5 mpg, highway, at about 70 mph average speed; that was over a 35 mile run up I-25 between Colorado Springs and Denver...no issues with the 2.5 non-turbo going up monument hill.

Average on that tank of gas - about 50 / 50 highway + city = 23.5 mpg, measured based on miles / gallons added...

The meter is somewhat instantaneous, so you cannot use it as a measure of total tank mpg; but it does give you an indication based on the type of driving you are doing what your mpg is at any given moment...

I am at 850 miles and averaging around 22.5 in my country town (four stop lights and country roads). I don't think its too bad considering my Grand Cherokee I traded averaged 16 during the same driving. Now if I can just learn the NOT kick in the turbo all the time....

Default First Road Trip

Just finished a 600 mile total road trip through NC/VA/TN mountains. 2009 N/A auto. Averaged about 27 mpg. Highest I saw the MPG gauge read was 30.0 mpg but it mostly said 27.9. 65-70 mph interstate average. I was pleased.

Yea. Checking mileage on only one tankful ftl. You need at least 2 fillups.

I'm thinking 600 miles is going to need 2 tanks... unless '09's have a 30 gallon tank.

My first 1,000 km returns 9.2 L/100km (25.7 mpg US or 32 mpg Imperial). This is on mixed driving of around 50/50 rural/urban driving.

I also have the 2009 N/A Ltd. version.

I am wondering if the wider 17" tires may make a slight difference (either slightly better or worse mileage figures - who knows?)

I have about 500 miles on it right now and best we saw was about 25mpg, at mostly highway speeds. othe city is a killer with stop and go, posting a low 16.7mpg. Our average tank is about 22-23 combined. Hope it'll get better once it's properly broken in.

You won't see any change. The only thing that can change are your driving habits.

I just finished 1,000 km on my '09 X Ltd. and did the math. It came out to 9.4 L/100 km (even though the dash readout had it at 9.2 nearly the whole time). That works out to 25 mpg according to the online calculator.

Not too bad, especially since the engine is probably still a bit tight. I am going to try to set an all-time record on my next fill.

Just hit 1,000 km with our new 09 Forester and we're averaging about 6.8 L/100 km which I find amazing!! It's a mix between city driving during the week and then highway driving on the weekends. I try and do my best at "hypermiling", trying to keep it around 1500 rpm, never excellerating too quickly or slamming on the breaks.. My boyfriend and I have a competition going to see who can get the best mpg for the longest, so far, i'm winning!! But I also drive it more than him. I am very impressed with the gas mileage over all and was a little worried when we first bought it but the hypermiling has been doing wonders!

We just got ours on Saturday. I picked it up in Sacramento wtih 29 miles on it, drove it up over Donner Summit to Reno (running 70-75 the whole way, mostly 3rd gear so it wouldn't hunt between 3-4 so much), coasted down the other side, and drove around town a bit today. First fillup (7 gal) got 21 mpg (hand calculated), about 1/2 mpg lower than the meter.

Today, we drove back over the hill to pick up my WRX so I could head back to San Jose (for work) and I was running 70-75 most of the way and saw 25.5 on the meter by the time we got to the dealer. I'll ask her what it says now that she got back to Reno. It should have around 400 miles on it now total.

It's worth noting that our 2.5X automatic is getting just about identical mileage to my 08 WRX 5sp, which is good. I've been averaging 20-22 in town (some freeway) and 29-30 on the freeway. These are all hand-calculated numbers. I'm pretty impressed, since that's running 70-80 most of the time.

I've had my 09 X for a month today. I've put 1800 miles on it so far with a rolling average of 29mpg over the entire time (5spd stick). The last couple tanks have been 31mpg. Leaving the AC off helps, I don't like AC so I don't use it, I've turned on the defroster to clear the windshield in really hard rain and you can watch the MPG just plummet. The highest I've had my dash guage is 34mpg over about 50 miles on a trip through Western Mass. I'm about as happy as I can be. I'm sure it will go down a little in a few weeks. I'll be putting a Thule rack up top, I've got the naked roof right now.

How many RPMs is 75 mph in 3rd gear? That was a mighty bold break-in.

I picked my 08 up in a distant city with 30 miles on it, and drove home at varied speeds on twisty hilly 2-lane roads to avoid the Interstate. Drove the next 1,000 miles like that, too.
