I'm changing the spark plugs on my dad's 1996 Toyota Camry (4 cyl). I read on the internet that 10-12 ft/lbs is the recommended torque.. Does that sound right?
Sounds about right. I believe these have the washer ring (rather than seizing metal-metal like on a small block V-8). I never use a torque wrench and just tighten until it feels seated. I do make a point not to pull hard on the end of the ratchet handle. And use some anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs.
I just did them succesfully, they were really overdue.. I also had to put in new spark plug wires because the insides of two of the wires broke off and stuck to the spark plugs. Plus the tubes were full of oil so I had to find a new set of spark plug tube seals and valve cover gasket. :huh:
So then I had to buy and 11" needle nose plier to remove the broken ends as well a new set of NGK spark plug wires and the seals, which I was luckily able to find today after 3 hours of driving around to several stores...
I did 11ft/lbs on the spark plugs felt right to me. All I need to do is change the intake tube (entire thing is dry rotted and full of cracks),air filter, front brake pads, rear drums, and distributor o-ring.
I'm considering to get a cheap short ram intake for it instead since a panel filter and intake tube are about the same price..
But I'm glad its done to this point, and I think it also solved the rough idle it had, was idling previously around 500 rpm and now its around 1000 rpm, alot smoother! :rock:
